"The images in this volume are drawn from a photographic exhibition entitled Umhlaba (Land) 1913-2013, held to mark the centenary of the Natives Land Act of 1913 which laid the foundations for segregation and apartheid, and whose legacy of inequality and division is still felt today. It was shown at the Iziko South African National Gallery in Cape Town from March to July 2013, and the Wits Art Museum in Johannesburg in August 2013. Believed to be the largest photographic exhibition ever assembled on the land issue in South Africa, Umhlaba comprised historical and contemporary images by more than 30 photographers, some of whose work was drawn from collections in 18 major South African archives.
