Magnetic properties of rare earth metals by R. J Elliott( Book )

6 editions published in 1972 in English and held by 333 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The rare earths have a unique place among the elements. Although very much alike chemically and in most phy~ical properties they each have very different and striking magnetic properties. The reason, of course, lies in their 4f electrons which determine the magnetic properties but have little effect on other chemical and physical behaviour. Although they are not rare, some indeed are among the more common heavy elements in the earth's crust, the difficulty of separation has meant that their intricate magnetic properties have only recently been unravelled. Now, however, the general pattern of their magnetism is well charted and the underlying theory is well understood. Both are thoroughly summarised in this book. It provides an excellent example of the kind of extensive synthesis which is possible with modem solid state physics. it represents only a high plateau in the ascent to complete understanding. But It will become clear to the reader that while the overall position is satisfactory there are many details still to be elucidated experimentally and much to be done theoretically before all the underlying forces are identified and estimated from a priori calculations. It is hoped that the book will provide a useful stimulus in this direction. It should also be of use to those who are interested in related disciplines, for example the rare earth compounds, or the transition metals. In addition rare earths promise to be important technologically as alloy constituents
Magnetic phase transitions : proceedings of summer school at the Ettore Majorana Centre, Erice, Italy, 5-13 July 1983 by M Ausloos( Book )

18 editions published between 1982 and 1983 in 3 languages and held by 230 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The present volume contains the courses given at a Summer School on "Magne tic Phase Transitions" held at the Ettore Majorana Centre for Scientific Culture, at Erice (Trapani), Italy in July 1983 under the auspices of the Condensed Matter Division of the European Physical Society in their series on Materials Science and Technology. The student participants came from West Germany, Great Britain, Brazil, Greece, Switzerland, Sweden, Italy, USA and The Netherlands. The lecturers came from various European countries, Israel, USA and Canada. The atmosphere at the meeting was excellent and a good spirit of companion ship developed during two weeks of working together. The spread of interests among the lecturers and students was divers;jfied but balanced. The main lec turing contributions are reported in this volume. They represent up-to-date reviews in a pedagogical style. In addition, informal presentations on cur rent research interests were made which have not been included. The school attempted to summarize the current position on the properties of magnetic phase transitions from several points of view. The range and scope of the oretical techniques, and of particular aspects of materials or phenomena as observed experimentally were very well put forward by the lecturers. The grouping of manuscripts in chapters does not represent, however, the sched ule followed during the school. Contributions on mean-field approximations and renormalization-group methods either for static or dynamic phenomena can be found at various places in the following sections

Optical properties of mixed crystals by R. J Elliott( Book )

11 editions published between 1988 and 2012 in 3 languages and held by 177 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

``Optical Properties of Mixed Crystals'' is concerned with the description of optical processes in substitutionally disordered semiconductors and insulators which can be basically described through their elementary excitations. Two of the chapters relate to the phonon response including the effect of side bands on electron transitions. Two relate to electronic spectra, one on photoelectron spectroscopy and the other on excitons. A further chapter deals with magnons in magnetic crystals and a final chapter is related to fluctuations and band edge effects. Each chapter deals with a specific class of excitation, but the book makes it clear that the fundamental structure of the excitation spectra, including band formation, band tailing and localisation is common to every type of excitation. The volume shows how some basic concepts and ideas can be widely applied to bring coherence and understanding to a diverse area of solid state physics. It therefore provides an up-to-date summary of the experimental and theoretical situation in an important and rapidly developing field and brings together for the first time a discussion of the many different types of spectra which appear in mixed crystals
Atomic diffusion in disordered materials : theory and applications by Minko Balkanski( Book )

10 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 121 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book describes a body of work whose ultimate goal is to optimize the design of microbatteries. It focuses on the fundamental properties of the structure and atomic diffusion in glassy materials which optimize the properties of the electrolyte. Experimental results and their phenomenological description of lithium borate glasses are extensively covered. Other chapters discuss the effects of barriers between the electrodes and the electrolyte and the book culminates with a description of actual progress in making applications of these materials to batteries, sensors and other devices

Current topics in physics : in honor of Sir Roger J. Elliott by R. J Elliott( Book )

6 editions published in 2005 in English and Undetermined and held by 72 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This indispensable book is a compilation of invited talks delivered at the symposium, "Current Topics in Physics" held in Mexico City in June 2003, to celebrate the 75th birthday of Professor Sir Roger Elliott. The contributions have been prepared by research associates, former students, post-doctoral fellows and colleagues of Professor Elliott, many of them leading scientists - as Sir Roger himself - in important research institutes around the world. The book gives a very timely and comprehensive overview of various key areas of modern condensed matter and statistical physics. 19 original contributions are included, grouped in three main areas: disorder and dynamical systems, structures and glasses, electrical and magnetic properties. The contributions are by many of the foremost researchers in the field of condensed matter and statistical physics. In particular, contributions by such prominent scientists as M E Fisher, A A Maradudin, M F Thorpe, M Balkanski, T Fujiwara, and of course Sir Roger Elliott himself make this book a rewarding read

Vibrations of defects in lattices. Five lectures by R. J Elliott( Book )

2 editions published in 1966 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report presents the notes from a series of five lectures on the vibrations of defects in crystals, given by Dr. R.J. Elliott of the Department of Theoretical Physics, Oxford, England. The lectures were given at Argonne National Laboratory in the spring of 1966 when Dr. Elliott was a visiting professor at the University of Illinois, Urbana. The lectures review many theoretical ideas current in research on vibrations in imperfect crystals. Principally they relate the classical Green's-function techniques of Lifshitz and others to the more modern thermodynamic Green's-functions methods. Except for additions of minor details and a list of references, the material here is as presented in the lectures
Defects and Disorder in Amorphous and Damaged Silicon by R. J Elliott( Book )

2 editions published in 1987 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study of defects and disorder in Si has focussed on models of excitation near defects in the crystal, in structurally disordered amorphous material, and at interfaces between crystal and amorphous material. The first section deals with the vibrations of Si slabs with (111) faces subject to varying boundary conditions. In particular slabs with free boundaries, with dangling bonds saturated by hydrogen, and slabs embedded in amorphous material were considered. The shift and broadening of the Raman peak was calculated and it was shown how this could be used to obtain estimates of crystallyte size in disordered material. The main work related to a model of electron states at an interface between crystalline Si and amorphous SiO2. The latter material was modelled using a Bethe lattice. The final component of the work was a study of various aspects of electronic energy levels in quantum wells. The detailed form of the hole band structure including the anomalous dispersion of the sub-bands was examined in detail, as was the non-parabolicity of the conduction sub-bands. The effect of these changes on the exciton binding energy was examined in some detail for several systems
