Im Jahr 1511 veröffentlichte der Nürnberger Künstler und Humanist Albrecht Dürer gleich drei "große" Bücher. Während die "Apokalypse" und die "große Passion" eher konservativ orientiert waren, beschritt Dürer mit dem "Marienleben" neue Wege der Buchkunst. Die Gegenüberstellung von erzählender Holzschnittfolge und den kunstvoll gesetzten lateinischen Versen des Benediktinermönches Chelidonius stellt allein durch den ästhetischen Anspruch schon ein Novum in der Buchgestaltung dar. Das Werk transportierte darüber hinaus auch inhaltlich ein aktuelles Anliegen. Eine kommentierte Neuübersetzung der lateinischen Verse des Chelidonius von Claudia Wiener leitet die Monographie ein, gefolgt von den Einzelblättern der Holzschnittfolge. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Buchausgabe des "Marienlebens". Immer mit Blick auf Dürers weitere Buchpublikationen des Jahres 1511 werden Editionstechnik und -geschichte erläutert, die unternehmerische Seite des Künstlers ebenso beleuchtet wie der handwerkliche Hintergrund, der zur Fertigstellung eines Buches im frühen 16. Jahrhundert nötig war. Der Vergleich mit zeitgenössischen illustrierten Erbauungsbüchern streicht Dürers gestalterisches Vermögen heraus und zeigt, wie er traditionelles Erscheinungsbild mit neuen ästhetischen Impulsen kombinierte.
