The past two decades have witnessed a remarkable renaissance in the academic study of the history of the Jews in Great Britain and of their impact upon British history. The essays presented in this volume reflect and offer some of the finest fruits of that regeneration, which could scarcely have been imagined a generation ago. --Book Jacket
Modern British Jewry by Geoffrey Alderman( Book )

23 editions published between 1992 and 2008 in 3 languages and held by 472 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This is an authoritative and comprehensive history of the Jews of Britain over the last century and a half. Geoffrey Alderman examines the social structure and economic base of Jewish communities in Victorian England and traces the struggle for emancipation. He analyses the effects of the large-scale immigration of the early twentieth century, and charts the development of the Zionist movement in Britain." "Professor Alderman takes his account up to the present day, exploring the concerns and self-image of contemporary Jewish communities in Britain and their place in an increasingly pluralist society." "Based on a wealth of primary and secondary sources, Modern British Jewry is a political, social, and intellectual history of British Jews which is critical, scholarly, and immensely readable."--Jacket

The Holocaust : why did Anglo-Jewry stand idly by? by Geoffrey Alderman( Book )

2 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 34 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

During various stages of the implementation of the Nazi anti-Jewish policy and of the Holocaust, British Jewry manifested too little empathy and compassion toward the victims and too few efforts on their behalf. In 1933-39 the Jewish leadership adopted the attitude of the British authorities toward the refugees: they would have the status of transmigrants and the Jewish organizations would be in charge of their welfare. The attitude of rank-and-file British Jews toward the refugees was often negative. In 1940 many of them supported the policy of internment of Central European Jews. Their reaction at the end of 1942 to news of the Nazi mass murder of Jews was muted, and they failed to exert significant pressure on the government in regard to the bombing of Auschwitz in 1944. The passivity of British Jews in the face of the Holocaust can be attributed not only to their wish to appear "British" and patriotic, but also to the fact that many of them adopted the antisemitic attitudes of British society
