Physicist and professor Sylvester James Gates, Jr. was born on December 15, 1950, in Tampa, Florida. Interested in science from a young age, Gates went on to earn his B.S. degrees in mathematics and physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1973. He earned his Ph.D. degree in physics from MIT in 1977. Gates joined the University of Maryland as an associate professor of physics in 1984, becoming a full professor in 1988. In 1998, he went on to become the first African American to hold an endowed chair in physics at a major research university. Gates’s work has focused on supersymmetry, supergravity and string theory. He has contributed to a number of research papers, articles, and textbooks. Gates has won many awards, including being the first recipient of the American Physical Society’s Edward A. Bouchet Award. In 2013, he received the National Medal of Science and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences
