LA in the 50's: Notorious gangster Mickey Cohen has just been put away for tax evasion, and now a bunch of his heroin is missing. Outside wise guys would love to move in on Mickey's territory; Captain Dudley Smith of the LAPD has launched a special squad to deal with them. Violent, thuggish team member Bud White's partner is murdered during a robbery at The Nite Owl coffee shop. The responding officer is rising star Detective Lieutenant Ed Exley, whose investigation intersects with that of Detective Jack Vincennes. Their leads point to Pierce Patchett, a drug dealing pimp whose prostitutes are surgically altered to look like movie stars. Nothing is as it seems in the glittering city of Angels, which, despite its open streets and warm welcoming air, is a city constructed of secrets. As Hollywood scandal sheet editor Sid Hudgens says, some things in L.A. are always going to be "Off the record, on the QT, and very hush-hush."

Full title: My Funny Valentine: Chet Baker Plays And Sings For Lovers.<BR>Personnel: Chet Baker (vocals, trumpet); Herb Geller (alto & tenor saxophones); Jack Montrose (tenor saxophone); Bud Shank (baritone saxophone, flute); Bob Gordon (baritone saxophone); Bob Brookmeyer (valve trombone); Corky Hale (harp); Pete Jolly, Russ Freeman (piano); Jimmy Bond, Red Mitchell, Joe Mondragon, Leroy Vinnegar, Bob Whitlock, Carson Smith (bass); Lawrence Marable, Bobby White, Larry Bunker, Peter Littman, Stan Levey, Shelly Manne, Bob Neel (drums).<BR>Producer: Richard Bock.<BR>Compilation producer: Michael Cuscuna.<BR>Recorded between July 24, 1953 and July 26, 1956.<BR>This collection of ballads sees Chet Baker at his vocal prime. A thoroughly touching album, MY FUNNY VALENTINE displays Baker's talent and fondness for love songs. Love's gain and loss is explored most poignantly on "Time After Time" and "I Fall in Love Too Easily." On the former, Baker's voice sounds innocent and pure as he croons, "so lucky to be the one you run to see, in the evening, when the day is through."<BR>Baker's trumpet playing is equally tender and amorous, despite the nonchalant and laid-back groove of the music. (Such qualities would later become the hallmarks of the so called "cool" style of jazz.) But on MY FUNNY VALENTINE, Baker is far from cool. Indeed, his singing and trumpet playing is never callous, thick-skinned or unfeeling. In contrast, his approach is warm and affectionate. In fact, Baker may very well be the greatest example of a modern day troubadour
The best of Chet Baker plays by Chet Baker( Recording )

22 editions published between 1992 and 1997 in 5 languages and held by 302 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This 1953-1956 compilation represents Chet Baker's early days recording in Los Angeles. The album is about tightly arranged, uptempo burning than midtempo cool. Of course, Baker's introspective ballad playing is also featured on tracks such as "Moonlight Becomes You" and "Darn that Dream". Overall, however, what makes Baker's conception so unique in his early years, is the light, yet crisp, feel he and his band mates employ. Whether playing bebop or cool, his approach is consistent and, most of all, innovative. In short, it shows Baker's adaptability as well as his versatility
