1 edition published in 1991 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

In an effort to provide a safe work environment for all Hilton Head Island Fire Department personnel, the department Training Officer set out to correct a potentially life threatening problem. The problem centered around the many open bodies of water contained in and around the fire district. These bodies of water consist of a circumference of water, marinas, lagoons and an inordinate number of both indoor and outdoor pools. The concern centered around the possibility of a fully bunkered firefighter falling into the water. With an aggressive fire attack a standard mode of operations and with open water everywhere, the potential was high. At question was, what would happen when a fully protected firefighter was to fall into the water? In an effort to find out, a research project was conducted. Magazine and fire service books were evaluated

In this research paper the author has examined the written works of different authors. The purpose of which was to identify specific actions that members of the fire service could implement within their own departments to make better use of the local and/or regional medias. A basic premise on which this paper was constructed was that fire departments do not utilize the media effectively. Therefore, the purpose of the research paper was to identify the significance of the media as an opinion shaper; and secondly examine the practices and procedures recommended by departments with programs specifically intended to improve a fire department's communication with the media. The procedure was to research by topic any recent article dealing with the media. Additional research was also conducted on the topic of communication
Performance standards: making a decision by Lavarn Edward Lucas( Book )

1 edition published in 1992 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This resulted in many documents being submitted by a variety of fire departments detailing their own evaluation procedures. The end result of this survey was that the Hilton Head Island Fire Department has been convinced that it is vital to evaluate their personnel on a yearly basis. This evaluation should include as many tasks as possible that the firefighters might need to carry out on the emergency scene. Furthermore, the evaluations should be based on accuracy and established time frames. It is with this kind of formal policy that the Hilton Head Island Fire Department will attempt to supplement its training program. The attempt should prove successful and should maintain progressive, well-trained, and highly skilled personnel that should be capable of reacting in a seconds notice and routinely producing quality results
