"A bold trio of stories about love and loss ... [that] was a defining event of the art-house boom of the 90s. The films are named for the colors of the French flag and stand for the tenets of the French Revolution: liberty, equality, and fraternity--but that hardly explains their enigmatic beauty and rich humanity. Set in Paris, Warsaw, and Geneva, and ranging from tragedy to comedy, Blue, White, and Red ... examine a group of ambiguously interconnected people experiencing profound personal disruptions"--Container

Léon Morin is a devoted man of the cloth who is also the crush object of all the women of a small village in Nazi-occupied France. He finds himself most drawn to a sexually frustrated widow, a borderline heretic whose relationship with her confessor is a confrontation with both God and her own repressed desire. A triumph of mood, setting, and innuendo, Léon Morin, Priest is an irreverent pleasure from one of French cinema's towering virtuosos

Life during wartime is not simply men shooting at one another, but also women tending to their children. The widow Barny is one, an office worker in a rural village in occupied France, whose child's father was a Jewish man. When genial Italians occupy the village, all is well. Then the Nazis arrive, round up and shoot the Italians, and get down to the business of rounding up Jews. Barny has her daughter baptized as a Catholic for legal certification--and also sends her to hide on a farm in the country. A communist, she takes out her anger at this subterfuge by arguing with the priest, the young Father Morin. The priest and the widow begin a series of spiritually-cum-sexually-charged dialogues. Barny's crush on Father Morin offers a place for the film to examine religious conviction, while exploring the philosophy of belief and its meaning in everyday struggle

I Will Walk Like a Crazy Horse( Visual )

13 editions published between 1973 and 2007 in French and Spanish and held by 62 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Arrabal's second film; I WILL WALK LIKE A CRAZY HORSE (J'irai Comme un Cheval Fou) forsakes the political allegory present in Viva La Muerte for a dramatic discovery of faith and organized religion. The story follows a man, Aden, played by the American George Shannon, who flees society after the death of his controlling mother. Out in the wilderness he encounters the beauty of nature, and under the tutelage of a hermit named Marvel, becomes a "normal homme." Aden falls desperately in love with Marvel, who can communicate with animals, the clouds, and the sun. Upon returning to civilization, Marvel in tow, Aden is more aware than ever of the hideous and hypocritical nature of human society. I WILL WALK LIKE A CRAZY HORSE has long been considered a masterpiece of surrealist film and stands as Arrabal's most delirious and devlish picture, an outrageous portrait of both other-worldly beauty and inner torment DVD
The passion of Bernadette = La passion de Bernadette( Visual )

5 editions published between 1991 and 2004 in French and English and held by 62 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Following up the acclaimed best-selling movie, Bernadette, the story of the apparitions of Our Lady in Lourdes to Bernadette Soubirous, this beautiful Jean Delannoy film tells the rest of the story of her life after the Marian visions- the life that made Bernadette a saint. The grotto at Lourdes is flourishing with many pilgrims, and Bernadette leaves to enter the convent of the sisters of Nevers to dedicate her life to God. Under the harsh rule of the Novice Mistress who "doesn't believe in apparitions", Bernadette, now Sister Marie Bernard, begins her life of achieving sanctity through prayer, faith, suffering, and deep charity toward all. With another moving performance by actress Sydney Penny, this film reveals incessant illness and suffering that St. Bernadette patiently, even cheerfully endured throughout her life in the convent, often repeating her prayer to "suffer and offer it to God." She went to her eternal reward in 1879, at the age of 35. When her body was exhumed many years later, it was found to be incorrupt. Today she lays in rest in a glass case in the chapel of the Sisters of Nevers, where millions have come to see "the little saint of Lourdes."

At a family dinner, Vanda talks about the note Peppo left. Again the family tries to keep mom in the dark. They assign Giovanni to persuade Vanda to keep up appearances. He sees her unhappy relationship with her father, who suspects her of sleeping with a doctor. Hiroshima mon amour by Marguerite Duras( Book )

6 editions published between 1959 and 2006 in 4 languages and held by 19 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
