"Tristan und Isolde"ist eines der Größten Musikdramen Richard Wagners (1813 bis 1883). Leonard Bernstein nennt es sogar das "zentrale Werk der gesamten Musikgeschichte". Zum Inhalt: Tristan, ein vermeintlich besonders tugendhafter Ritter, hat den Auftrag, die schöne Königstochter Isolde von Irland ihrem zukünftigen Ehemann Marke, dem König von Cornwall, zuzuführen. Während der Überfahrt nach Britannien trinken die beiden versehentlich von einem eigentlich für Isolde und Marke bestimmten Liebestrank. Tristan und Isolde verlieben sich sofort unsterblich ineinander. In der Folgezeit brechen die Liebenden alle gesellschaftlichen und religiösen Gesetze, ziehen Verderben auf sich selbst und die Menschen in ihrem Umfeld. Nach mehreren, immer unwahrscheinlicheren abenteuerlichen Verstrickungen erliegt das Liebespaar schließlich einer Täuschung, wegen der zunächst Tristan und gleich darauf vor Kummer auch Isolde stirbt. Die hier vorliegende 4 CD Box wurde von dem Chorus Of the Royal Opera House, dem Philharmonia Orchester, Covent Garden und unter der Leitung von Wilhelm Furtwängler eingespielt. Diese historische Gesamtaufnahme, die 1952 mit Gästen wie Ludwig Suthaus, Kirsten Flagstad, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau und vielen anderen aufgenommen wurde ist auch klanglich überarbeitet eine Besonderheit
