The functions studied in this monogra9h are a cross between elliptic functions and modular forms in one variable. Note that th e function cp (T, 0) is an ordinary modular formofweight k, whileforfixed T thefunction z+rjl( r, z) isa function of the type normally used to embed the elliptic curve ~/~T + ~ into a projective space. If m= 0, then cp is independent of z and the definition reduces to the usual notion of modular forms in one variable. We give three other examples of situations where functions satisfying (1)(3) arise classically: 1. Theta series. Period functions for Maass wave forms and cohomology by

10 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 85 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The authors construct explicit isomorphisms between spaces of Maass wave forms and cohomology groups for discrete cofinite groups \Gamma\subset\mathrm{PSL}_2({\mathbb{R}}). In the case that \Gamma is the modular group \mathrm{PSL}_2({\mathbb{Z}}) this gives a cohomological framework for the results in Period functions for Maass wave forms. I, of J. Lewis and D. Zagier in Ann. Math. 153 (2001), 191258, where a bijection was given between cuspidal Maass forms and period functions. The authors introduce the concepts of mixed parabolic cohomology group and semianalytic vectors in principal serie

Bernoulli numbers and Zeta functions by
Tsuneo Arakawa(

)
9 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 72 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Two major subjects are treated in this book. The main one is the theory of Bernoulli numbers and the other is the theory of zeta functions. Historically, Bernoulli numbers were introduced to give formulas for the sums of powers of consecutive integers. The real reason that they are indispensable for number theory, however, lies in the fact that special values of the Riemann zeta function can be written by using Bernoulli numbers. This leads to more advanced topics, a number of which are treated in this book: Historical remarks on Bernoulli numbers and the formula for the sum of powers of consecutive integers; a formula for Bernoulli numbers by Stirling numbers; the Clausenvon Staudt theorem on the denominators of Bernoulli numbers; Kummer's congruence between Bernoulli numbers and a related theory of [rho]adic measures; the EulerMaclaurin summation formula; the functional equation of the Riemann zeta function and the Dirichlet L functions, and their special values at suitable integers; various formulas of exponential sums expressed by generalized Bernoulli numbers; the relation between ideal classes of orders of quadratic fields and equivalence classes of binary quadratic forms; class number formula for positive definite binary quadratic forms; congruences between some class numbers and Bernoulli numbers; simple zeta functions of prehomogeneous vector spaces; Hurwitz numbers; Barnes multiple zeta functions and their special values; the functional equation of the double zeta functions; and polyBernoulli numbers. An appendix by Don Zagier on curious and exotic identities for Bernoulli numbers is also supplied. This book will be enjoyable both for amateurs and for professional researchers. Because the logical relations between the chapters are loosely connected, readers can start with any chapter depending on their interests. The expositions of the topics are not always typical, and some parts are completely new

Graphs on surfaces and their applications by

"Graphs drawn on twodimensional surfaces have always attracted researchers by their beauty and by the variety of difficult questions to which they give rise. The theory of such embedded graphs, which long seemed rather isolated, has witnessed the appearance of entirely unexpected new applications in recent decades, ranging from Galois theory to quantum gravity models, and has become a kind of a focus of a vast field of research. The book provides an accessible introduction to this new domain, including such topics as coverings of Riemann surfaces, the Galois group action on embedded graphs (Grothendieck's theory of "dessins d'enfants"), the matrix integral method, moduli spaces of curves, the topology of meromorphic functions, and combinatorial aspects of Vassiliev's knot invariants and, in an appendix by Don Zagier, the use of finite group representation theory. The presentation is concrete throughout, with numerous figures, examples (including computer calculations) and exercises, and should appeal to both graduate students and researchers."Jacket

Arbeitstagung Bonn 2013 : in memory of Friedrich Hirzebruch by Mathematische Arbeitstagung(
Book
)
10 editions published in 2016 in English and German and held by 17 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This volume contains selected papers authored by speakers and participants of the 2013 Arbeitstagung, held at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, Germany, from May 2228. The 2013 meeting (and this resulting proceedings) was dedicated to the memory of Friedrich Hirzebruch, who passed away on May 27, 2012. Hirzebruch organized the first Arbeitstagung in 1957 with a unique concept that would become its most distinctive feature: the program was not determined beforehand by the organizers, but during the meeting by all participants in an open discussion. This ensured that the talks would be on the latest developments in mathematics and that many important results were presented at the conference for the first time. Written by leading mathematicians, the papers in this volume cover various topics from algebraic geometry, topology, analysis, operator theory, and representation theory and display the breadth and depth of pure mathematics that has always been characteristic of the Arbeitstagung. (4e de couv.)

Abstract: "We find an analytic solution of the Bethe Ansatz equations (BAE) for the special case of a finite XXZ spin chain with free boundary conditions and with a complex surface field which provides for U[subscript q](sl(2)) symmetry of the Hamiltonian. More precisely, we find one nontrivial solution, corresponding to the ground state of the system with anisotropy parameter [delta] = 1/2 corresponding to q³ = 1."

Mathematics has a certain mystique, for it is pure and ex act, yet demands remarkable creativity. This reputation is reinforced by its characteristic abstraction and its own in dividual language, which often disguise its origins in and connections with the physical world. Publishing mathematics, therefore, requires special effort and talent. Heinz Gotze, who has dedicated his life to scientific pu blishing, took up this challenge with his typical enthusi asm. This Festschrift celebrates his invaluable contribu tions to the mathematical community, many of whose leading members he counts among his personal friends. The articles, written by mathematicians from around the world and coming from diverse fields, portray the important role of mathematics in our culture. Here, the reflections of important mathematicians, often focused on the history of mathematics, are collected, in recognition of Heinz Gotze's lifelong support of mathematics
