14 editions published between 1962 and 2015 in 4 languages and held by 165 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This film both documents and dramatises the problems faced by those who care for intellectually handicapped children. Garland brings the emotionalism of her playing to the role of a teacher who develops too close an attachment to one of the children in the school which brings her into conflict with the psychologist in charge (Lancaster). While the lead child role is played by a professional actor (Ritchey) most of the other children in the film were actual patients of Pacific State Hospital, Pomona, California. Cassavetes' preference for quasi-documentary observation appears to have come into conflict with Kramer's penchant for didacticism, although the completed film retains a good deal of the former approach
