A place in the shade : the new landscape & other essays by Charles Correa( Book )

12 editions published between 2010 and 2012 in English and held by 136 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Over the last fifty years, Charles Correa (b. 1930 in Secunderabad), has been of decisive importance to architecture in post-Independence India. He has also been a pioneer in addressing crucial issues of housing and urbanisation in the Third World, including the proliferation of squatters. This selection of essays and lectures covers a wide spectrum of themes, from the metaphysical to the pragmatic, on a variety of subjects - including architecture, urban planning, landscape, and individuals as diverse as Corbusier, Brunel and Mahatma Gandhi. Also incorporated is a reprint of his seminal 1985 book, long out of print, on Third World urbanisation 'The New Landscape'. Correa has won the highest honours of his profession, including the Gold Medals of the RIBA, the UIA and the IIA, as well as the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, and the Praemium Imperiale of Japan
Le Corbusier : Chandigarh and the modern city : insights into the iconic city sixty years later( Book )

5 editions published between 2009 and 2010 in English and held by 119 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The book revisits the Chandigarh and examines its built and social form in terms of today's perspectives, reviewing the changes in the city and to the lives of its inhabitants and its architecture. The idea is to have an internationally known group of scholars, practitioners and critics look at the city through different lenses; to creatively speculate about the city and the way that its original conception has stood up to the pressures of becoming a contemporary Indian city. The notion of reviewing a city's performance, especially a city of such widespread importance, after two generations of existence is not common, and can offer lessons for other cities
Charles Correa : India's greatest architect( Book )

3 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 75 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book celebrates the work of India's greatest architect - Charles Correa. Born in 1930, Correa is an Indian and international architect who, in a lifetime of achievement, has created work which is consistently beautiful, human and enduring. He played a defining role in the architecture of post-Independence India and has designed some of the most outstanding cultural and civic monuments, science institutes, schools, housing developments and new cities, based on a profound understanding of his country's history, needs and aspirations. Correa's work has provided inspiration for future generations of architects at a time of vertiginous population and economic growth in the region. For this, he has received many awards including Britain's highest architectural accolade, the Royal Gold Medal in 1984. Rooted in India but educated as an architect in the United States and steeped in the modernist teachings of Le Corbusier, Correa has concentrated on the living patterns in communities where he worked, achieving remarkable results with simple but effective means. Tradition and modernity are not opposites for him. Always contemporary, he has subtly layered the history of the land and of ideas in his designs. His sources range from the railway models of his childhood to conceptions of the Cosmos and to street-hawkers' use of the Mumbai pavements. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a remarkably consistent approach, guided by a respect for the given conditions, a desire to effect change without forced interference, and a passion to combine fitness for purpose with beauty and spirituality

Form follows climate by Charles Correa( )

1 edition published in 2009 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Best known for his planning proposals for New Bombay, Charles Correa has practised architecture in India since 1958, and has received many awards and international recognition for his work. In the large variety of his projects there has always been a special emphasis on the crucial issue of climate control To build in India, he says in his recorded talk, is to respond to climate, as it has never been possible to squander the kind of money and energy necessary to air-condition a building under the tropical sun. He sees this as an advantage because it means that the building itself, through its configuration, must provide the controls that the user needs. This kind of climate control involves the section, plan, shape, and very heart of the building; even generating new lifetyles in the necessary inventiveness. He uses examples of his own work as well as ancient designs to illustrate the points he makes. He thinks that the energy crisis could well produce a response to climate that will give architecture the structure it so urgently needs
