One market, one money : an evaluation of the potential benefits and costs of forming an economic and monetary union by Michael Emerson( Book )

18 editions published between 1992 and 2008 in English and held by 488 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The European Community is negotiating a new Treaty to establish the constitutional foundations of an economic and monetary union in the course of the 1990s." "Coming hard on the heels of the completion of the single market by 1992, economic and monetary union, including a new European Central Bank and the ecu as the single currency, will be the most important milestone in the construction of the new Europe since the Treaty of Rome of 1957." "This study provides the only comprehensive guide to the economic implications of economic and monetary union. Being the work of economists inside the EC Commission, it also reflects the considerations influencing the design of the union. The study provides a unique bridge between the insights of modern economic analysis and the work of the policy-makers preparing for economic and monetary union."--Jacket
Redrawing the map of Europe by Michael Emerson( Book )

29 editions published between 1996 and 2001 in 3 languages and held by 418 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Michael Emerson has rare qualifications to advance ideas for the future of Europe in the early 21st century, having been economist, diplomat and academic in Paris, Brussels, Moscow and London. He does so in bold, fundamental terms. His is the whole Europe, from the Atlantic to Urals. The first part of the book dissects Europe's contradictory capacity for both enlightened integration and savage conflict. The second part confronts the strategies issues for Europe's future, treating questions of economics, security and institutions as a seamless web. Michael Emerson's main argument is twofold: (a) The European Union, having largely solved the 'German problem', still needs to make a success of the Euro and its security policies; and (b) a stronger structure for the wider Europe is needed to solve the 'Russian problem', and on this Emerson makes original proposals."--Jacket

European Islam : challenges for public policy and society( Book )

13 editions published in 2007 in English and Undetermined and held by 230 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Works on Islam in Europe often read like a juxtaposition of national case studies covering the history and perhaps the sociology of immigrant groups in the countries considered. The chapters in this work therefore aim to supply policy-makers, analysts and civil society leaders with an inventory of the main issues concerning the presence of Islam in Europe."--Jacket
Political Islam and European foreign policy : perspectives from Muslim democrats of the Mediterranean( Book )

12 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 185 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The time is ripe for the European Union, its institutions and member states to undertake an explicit review of its current policy of 'benign neglect' towards the broad collection of 'Muslim democrat' parties in the Mediterranean Arab states. The group of experts assembled to produce this new book adduces mounting evidence that this policy may lead to unintended consequences, such as the reinforcement of anti-democratic regimes and radical Islamism. Their arguments favour a broad inclusion of Muslim democrats in EU initiatives aiming at the reform of governance and the development of civil society, without extending to them any singular, exclusive or unsolicited privileges
Ethno-religious conflict in Europe : typologies of radicalisation in Europe's Muslim communities by Olivier Roy( Book )

13 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 159 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book addresses the greatest source of societal tensions and violent conflict in contemporary Europe, involving people from minority groups of Muslim culture. Six country case studies -- on Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Russia and the United Kingdom -- give a comprehensive account of Islam-related tensions and violence, from the jihadist terrorist acts seen in Europe in the aftermath of 9/11 in the US, through to the urban riots of the type seen in France in 2005. Also included is an interpretation of the fundamental nature of the Islamist terrorism in Europe, with the outline of a strategy to repel it."

Islamist radicalisation : the challenge for Euro-Mediterranean relations by Omayma Abdel-Latif( Book )

10 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 140 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Issues relating to political Islam continue to present challenges to European foreign policies in the Middle East and North Africa. In this volume, European and regional experts analyse trends driving the radicalisation of political Islam as well as the contrary trend of de-radicalisation observed in some countries where Islamist parties have secured democratic political participation. The question underlying the book is whether the EU should engage more specifically with the 'moderate' Islamist parties, and at least recognise radical Islamist movements the achieve democratic electoral success and legitimacy, such as Palestinian Hamas. Current EU policies are largely negative on both accounts. The conclusions of this book argue for a change in this stance, with a three-dimensional approach: a) to put pressure on incumbent regimes to abandon the repression of moderate Islamist movements, b) to influence the legal and political frameworks regulating social and political participation in a more open way and c) to engage in dialogue with non-violent opposition forces--both Islamist and non-Islamist. In the absence of such policies, the EU risks contributing to a re-radicalisation of movements that have become disillusioned with the failure of their political moderation to produce results."--Page 4 of cover
Britain's future in Europe : reform, renegotiation, repatriation or secession? by Michael Emerson( Book )

8 editions published in 2015 in English and French and held by 137 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

If the Conservative Party wins the 2015 general election, Prime Minister David Cameron has promised the British people that a referendum on the country's future in the European Union will take place in 2017. A decision of this gravity needs to be made with the fullest understanding of its consequences, based on facts. This book offers a succinct, objective and comprehensive review of the evidence, the source of which is the British government's own research project, Review of the Balance of Competences between the United Kingdom and the European Union. This Review draws together over 3,000 pages of independent assessments of whether the distribution of powers between the EU and the member states is right or needs to be changed. The case for policy reform, renegotiation or repatriation of powers is presented across 32 different policy areas. The picture that emerges is far more nuanced and refined than the rhetoric that surrounds this crucial debate on Britain's future in Europe would suggest. The authors offer an analysis of the evidence and invite readers to draw their own conclusions from the information they present
The elephant and the bear try again : options for a new agreement between the EU and Russia( Book )

9 editions published between 2006 and 2007 in English and held by 132 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The year 2007 will mark the tenth anniversary of the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA) between the EU and Russia. At their Sochi summit in May 2006, the two parties agreed to work towards a new agreement to replace the PCA. This book explores whether the EU and Russia could make a better job of their strained relationship, which, while peaceful, is nevertheless characterised by mounting grumbles on both sides over how to govern oil and gas trade and investment, through to issues of democratic values and divergent approaches to such countries as Georgia and Ukraine in their overlapping neighbourhoods

Deepening EU-Georgian relations : what, why and how? by Michael Emerson( )

15 editions published between 2016 and 2018 in English and Undetermined and held by 124 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The signing of the Association Agreement and DCFTA between Georgia and the European Union in 2014 was a strategic political act to deepen the realisation of Georgia's 'European choice'. Of all the EU's eastern neighbours, Georgia has distinguished itself by pushing ahead in the years since the Rose Revolution of 2003 with the most radical economic liberalisation and reform agenda. It has notably succeeded in reducing corruption and establishing a highly favourable business climate. The Association Agreement and DCFTA thus build on a most promising base. The purpose of this Handbook is to make the legal content of the Association Agreement clearly comprehensible. It covers all the significant political and economic chapters of the Agreement, and in each case explains the meaning of the commitments made by Georgia and the challenges posed by their implementation. A unique reference source for this historic act, this Handbook is intended for professional readers, namely officials, parliamentarians, diplomats, business leaders, lawyers, consultants, think tanks, civil society organisations, university teachers, trainers, students and journalists. The work has been carried out by two teams of researchers from leading independent think tanks, CEPS in Brussels and the Reformatics policy consulting firm in Tbilisi, with the support of the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida). It is one of a trilogy of Handbooks, with the other two volumes examining similar Association Agreements made by the EU with Ukraine and Moldova."--Page 4 of cover
Deepening EU-Ukrainian relations : what, why and how? by Michael Emerson( )

13 editions published between 2016 and 2018 in English and held by 118 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The signing of the Association Agreement and DCFTA between Ukraine and European Union in 2014 was an act of strategic, geopolitical significance in the history of Ukraine. Emblematic of a struggle to replace the Yanukovich regime at home and to resist attempts by Russia to deny Ukraine its 'European choice', the Association Agreement is a defiant statement of the country's determination to become a democratic, independent state. The purpose of this Handbook is to make the legal content of the Association Agreement clearly comprehensible. It covers all the significant political and economic chapters of the Agreement, and in each case explains the meaning of the commitments made by Ukraine and the challenges posed by their implementation. A unique reference source for this historic act, this Handbook is intended for professional readers, namely officials, parliamentarians, diplomats, business leaders, lawyers, consultants, think tanks, civil society organizations, university teachers, trainers, students and journalists. The work has been carried out by two teams of researches from leading independent think tanks, CEPS in Brussels and the Institute for Economic Research and Policy Consulting (IER) in Kylv, with the support of the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida). It is one of a trilogy of Handbooks, with the other two volumes examining similar Association Agreements made by the EU with Georgia and Moldova
