Harmonic analysis of operators on Hilbert space by Béla Szőkefalvi-Nagy( Book )

34 editions published between 1970 and 2010 in English and held by 635 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The existence of unitary dilations makes it possible to study arbitrary contractions on a Hilbert space using the tools of harmonic analysis. The first edition of this book was an account of the progress done in this direction in 1950-70. Since then, this work has influenced many other areas of mathematics, most notably interpolation theory and control theory. This second edition, in addition to revising and amending the original text, focuses on further developments of the theory. Specifically, the last two chapters of the book continue and complete the study of two operator classes: operators whose powers do not converge strongly to zero, and operators whose functional calculus (as introduced in Chapter III) is not injective. For both of these classes, a wealth of material on structure, classification and invariant subspaces is included in Chapters IX and X. Several chapters conclude with a sketch of other developments related with (and developing) the material of the first edition
H [infinity]-control theory : lectures given at the 2nd session of the Centro internazionale matematico estivo (C.I.M.E.) held in Como, Italy, June 18-26, 1990 by Ciprian Foiaş( Book )

20 editions published in 1991 in English and German and held by 452 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The fundamental problem in control engineering is to provide robust performance to uncertain plants. H -control theory began in the early eighties as an attempt to lay down rigorous foundations on the classical robust control requirements. It now turns out that H -control theory is at the crossroads of several important directions of research space or polynomial approach to control and classical interpolation theory; harmonic analysis and operator theory; minimax LQ stochastic control and integral equations. The book presents the underlying fundamental ideas, problems and advances through the pen of leading contributors to the field, for graduate students and researchers in both engineering and mathematics. Robust control of infinite dimensional systems : frequency domain methods by Ciprian Foiaş( Book )

14 editions published between 1995 and 2005 in English and held by 352 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Since its inception in the early 1980s, H( optimization theory has become the control methodology of choice in robust feedback analysis and design. The purpose of this monograph is to present, in a tutorial fashion, a self contained operator theoretic approach to the H( control for disturbed parameter systems, that is, systems which admit infinite dimensional state spaces. Such systems arise for problems modelled by partial differential equations or which have time delays. Besides elucidating the mathematics of H( control, extensive treatment is given to its physical and engineering underpinnings. The techniques given in the book are carefully illustrated by two benchmark problems: an unstable system with a time delay which comes from the control of the X-29, and the control of a Euler-Bernoulli flexible beam with Kelvin-Voigt damping

Turbulence in fluid flows : a dynamical systems approach by George R Sell( Book )

11 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 263 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The articles in this volume are based on recent research on the phenomenon of turbulence in fluid flows collected by the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications. This volume looks into the dynamical properties of the solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations, the equations of motion of incompressible, viscous fluid flows, in order to better understand this phenomenon. Although it is a basic issue of science, it has implications over a wide spectrum of modern technological applications. The articles offer a variety of approaches to the Navier-Stokes problems and related issues. This book should be of interest to both applied mathematicians and engineers

The commutant lifting approach to interpolation problems by Ciprian Foiaş( Book )

14 editions published between 1989 and 1990 in English and held by 257 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Classical H~ interpolation theory was conceived at the beginning of the century by C. Caratheodory, L. Fejer and I. Schur. The basic method, due to Schur, in solving these problems consists in applying the Möbius transform to peel off the data. In 1967, D. Sarason encompassed these classical interpolation problems in a representation theorem of operators commuting with special contractions. Shortly after that, in 1968, B. Sz. Nagy and C. Foias obtained a purely geometrical extension of Sarason's results. Actually, their result states that operators intertwining restrictions of co-isometries can be extended, by preserving their norm, to operators intertwining these co-isometries; starring with R.G. Douglas, P.S. Muhly and C. Pearcy, this is referred to as the commutant lifting theorem. In 1957, Z. Nehari considered an L ~ interpolation problern which in turn encompassed the same classical interpolation problems, as well as the computation of the distance of a function f in L ~ to H~. At about the sametime as Sarason's work, V.M
Nonselfadjoint operator algebras, operator theory, and related topics : the Carl M. Pearcy anniversary volume by Hari Bercovici( Book )

9 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 223 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This volume, dedicated to Carl Pearcy on the occasion of his 60th birthday, presents recent results in operator theory, nonselfadjoint operator algebras, measure theory and the theory of moments. The articles on these subjects have been contributed by leading area experts, many of whom were associated with Carl Pearcy as students or collaborators."--Jacket
Metric constrained interpolation, commutant lifting, and systems by Ciprian Foiaş( Book )

10 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 219 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This monograph combines the commutant lifting theorem for operator theory and the state space method from system theory to provide a unified approach for solving both stationary and nonstationary interpolation problems with norm constraints. Included are the operator-valued versions of the tangential Nevanlinna-Pick problem, the Hermite-Fejér problem, the Nehari problem, the Sarason problem, and the two-sided Nudelman problem, and their nonstationary analogues. The main results concern the existence of solutions, the explicit construction of the central solutions in state space form, the maximum entropy property of the central solutions, and state space parametrizations of all solutions. Direct connections between the various interpolation problems are displayed. Applications to H[infinity] control problems are presented. This monograph should appeal to a wide group of mathematicians and engineers. The material is self-contained and may be used for advanced graduate courses and seminars

12 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 194 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Systems and control theories use sophisticated operator theoretical methods. They also provide new ideas and problems in operator theory." "The articles in this volume originated from the IWOTA conference held at Indiana University, Bloomington, in June 1996. They represent most of the areas that were discussed at the workshop with some emphasis on modern interpolation theory, a topic which has seen much progress in recent years."--Jacket

Integral manifolds and inertial manifolds for dissipative partial differential equations by P Constantin( )

4 editions published in 1989 in English and held by 84 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This work, the main results of which were announced in (CFNT), focuses on a new geometric explicit construction of inertial manifolds from integral manifolds generated by some initial dimensional surface. The method covers a large class of dissipative PDEs. The existence of a smooth integral manifold the closure of which in an inertial manifold M (i.E. containing X and uniformly exponentially attracting) requires a more detailed analysis of the geometric properties of the infinite dimensional flow. The method is explicity constructive, integrating forward in time and avoiding any fixed point theorems. The key geometric property upon which we base the construction of our integral inertial manifold M is a Spectral Blocking Property of the flow, which controls the evolution of the position of surface elements relative to the fixed reference frame associated to the linear principal part of the PDE
