Singer-songwriter Joe Jackson may have ridden the contentious nerve of late-1970s new wave to his first chart triumphs, but he quickly proved he was no slave to fashion. Even earlier than Elvis Costello, Jackson utilized his commercial clout to explore a diverse, idiosyncratic musical palette that ranged from swing through reggae, Tin Pan Alley, and classical. Having seemingly forsaken pop songs altogether in the '90s for larger classically themed set pieces, this live recording of Jackson performing songs in peak form with a stripped-down trio (including Graham Maby on bass and drummer Gary Burke) should come as something of a pleasant surprise for Jackson fans. Imbued with a healthy dose of the singer's trademark musical utopianism, the set list is characterized by smart renditions of vintage, if not overexposed Jackson catalog gems, several of which are interpolated in medleys with a generous sampling of cover songs that are often as surprising as they are insightful. Paired with the Yardbirds' moody "For Your Love," "Fools in Love" becomes a bluesy dirge, while Steely Dan's "King of the World" neatly bookends Jackson's "You Can't Get What You Want" both musically and thematically. It's also a record that should smartly segue into Jackson's anticipated sequel to his biggest (and best) pop/jazz fusion success, Night and Day . --Jerry McCulley

The Duke by Joe Jackson( Recording )

The Duke' is a tribute to jazz icon Duke Ellington. Though it is a tribute album, it's also very much a Joe Jackson album, consistent with his long-standing sense of musical adventure."I revere Duke Ellington, but I didn't want this to be a reverent album", Joe Jackson says of 'The Duke'. True to Jackson's word, the album is a decidedly unconventional salute to Ellington, demonstrating his timeless brilliance, whilst showcasing Jackson's sublime skills as an arranger, instrumentalist and vocal interpreter. The album finds the iconoclastic English singer/ composer/ arranger/ keyboardist and five time Grammy nominee interpreting 15 Ellington classics over the course of ten tracks, interspersing melodic and rhythmic elements of various compositions in a manner that's consistent with Ellington's own freewheeling approach. "Ellington didn't consider his own arrangements to be sacred", Jackson notes. "He constantly reworked them, sometimes quite radically. So I think my approach is in the spirit of the man himself." Jackson's distinctive voice is featured on numerous tracks, but he also trades vocals with punk icon Iggy Pop, and R&B diva Sharon Jones takes centre stage on the soulful 'I Ain't Got Nothin' But The Blues'. Jackson enlisted Iranian singer Sussan Deyhim to perform, along with Lilian Vieira, of the Brazilian/Dutch collective Zuco 103. Other guests include the contemporary jazz stars, violinist Regina Carter and bassist Christian McBride; rock guitar hero Steve Vai; drummer Ahmir '?uestlove' Thompson and other members of The Roots; and two of Jackson's old associates, guitarist Vinnie Zummo and percussionist Sue Hadjopoulos. The album was recorded and mixed by the legendary, seven time Grammy winner Elliot Scheiner (Steely Dan, Sting, Bob Dylan)

Since the release of his first best-selling album Look Sharp in 1979, Joe Jackson has forged a singular career in music through his originality as a composer and his notoriously independent stance toward music-business fashion. He has also been a famously private person, whose lack of interest in his own celebrity has been interpreted by some as aloofness. That reputation is shattered by A Cure for Gravity, Jackson's enormously funny and revealing memoir of growing up musical, from a culturally impoverished childhood in a rough English port town to the Royal Academy of Music, through London's
