"Through the influence of Lord Lyttleton, [Edward] Moore became the editor of a weekly periodical, The World (1753-6), under the nom de plume of Adam Fitz-Adam. Although Moore, who wrote sixty-one numbers, was permitted to take the entire profits of the venture in his memorandum with the bookseller Robert Dodsley, other contributors to the ... numbers included men of fashion, among them, lords Lyttleton, Bath, and Chesterfield, Soame Jenyns, Horace Walpole, and Edward Lovibond. Announcing his design 'to ridicule, with novelty and good-humour, the fashions, follies, vices, and absurdities of that part of the human species which calls itself the World' (vol. 1, no. 1) and promising to be 'very sparing of mottos' (ibid.), Fitz-Adam chattily covered a wide range of topics: the search for happiness, revival of Italian opera, need of calendrical reform, erection of a hospital for decayed actors and actresses, adroit use of face paint, and fashions for curling the hair for a month without combing. He also included and commented on real and fabricated letters to the editor from both unidentified and allegorized correspondents, such as Rebecca Blameless, Toby Frettabit, Mary Muzzy, and Sir Tunbelly Guzzle."--Patricia Demers, 'Moore, Edward (1712-1757)', Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Oxford University Press, Sept 2004; online ed., May 2005 [http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/19104, accessed 1 July 2010]
