The dynamics of "race" and gender : some feminist interventions by Haleh Afshar( )

15 editions published between 1994 and 2012 in English and held by 1,325 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"During the past decade, feminism and women's studies have been forced to acknowledge the diversities of women's experiences, as well as the patriarchal oppression that they share. The emphasis on difference has shattered the illusion of homogeneity and sisterhood which previously characterized white, middle class westernized feminist politics and analysis. There is relatively little work which concentrates on the inter-relationships of race and gender in general, and the consequences of racism, for women of different backgrounds, in particular. "The Dynamics of Race and Gender" aims to contribute to the debate and understanding in this area. Emphasis has been given to age, class, disability, race and sexuality. The contributors to this volume are from different religious, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, giving a balanced and broad ranging perspective on this important social question. Organized around three main themes, which are; issues of theory and method, questions of identity, racism and sexism at work, the chapters of this book indicate how the processes of "race" and gender interrelate in highly complex and contradictory ways. Demonstrating the benefits to be gained from analysing the interplay of various axes of differentiation in specific empirical and historical locations, and in doing so, under-scoring the point that diversity among women cannot be seen as a static phenomenon."--Back cover

Women, work, and ideology in the Third World( Book )

9 editions published in 1985 in English and held by 567 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

One of the primary methodological innovations of feminist researchers has been an assertion of the validity and centrality of the life experiences of individual women. This perspective arose partly to compensate for the malestream concentration on abstract theoretical issues that have little direct reference to the life experiences of the vast majority. In the latter approach, people are measured and evaluated with reference to how they fit into elaborate theoretical frameworks. ... The articles that make up this collection came out of a series of meetings of the Women and Development study group of the Development Studies Association at the University of Liverpool. They are written in the format of case studies of the conditions, both social and economic, of women's work, in particular regions of the Third World. While they focus on specific problems - land rights or levels of fertility - the underlying agenda of the authors is to try to understand and explain the ways that ideology functions as a tool that shapes and legitimates women's subordinate status. All the articles discuss, though in different ways, how ideologies of male dominance underline not only traditional religious values and social mores, but also the determination of the market value of female labour in a capitalist economy. They try to show how patriarchal beliefs, which are cornerstones of the Islamic and capitalist systems, combine to reinforce women's subordinate position. They raise fundamental questions about the long term impact of economic development policies and whether the movement of women into the paid labour market has had a positive or negative short term effect on women.-- Review from (Sep. 14, 2016)

Women in the Middle East : perceptions, realities, and struggles for liberation by Haleh Afshar( Book )

22 editions published between 1992 and 2001 in English and Undetermined and held by 369 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This collection of essays sets about exploding the myths created by years of orientalist writings about Middle Eastern women. The romanticised images of these gentle victims of the harems are contrasted with the exacting demands of daily battles for survival and the long-running struggles for political and economic liberation. The chapters of this book discuss the strategies they use to accommodate the edicts of Islam, both in their personal and public lives and the paths they have chosen in their arduous search for peace and progress. The authors, all of whom are actively engaged in this process, offer different solutions and advocate various ways forward. But they all share a common goal. Their chapters in this book help to dispel the image of the undulating perfumed sexual prey that the oriental woman is assumed to be, and carve a rightful place for the embattled Middle Eastern woman in the international arena

Women and adjustment policies in the Third World by Haleh Afshar( Book )

16 editions published between 1991 and 1996 in English and held by 326 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Third World debt crisis and the International Monetary Fund and World Bank's adjustment policies have compelled many countries to move towards a contraction of public-sector expenditure and market-orientated development policies. Women in general, and the poorest amongst them in particular, have borne a disproportionate burden of the ensuing hardships. This book addresses the shortcomings in the current gender-blind analytical frameworks of government and international financial organisations. The authors in this volume delineate the negative implications that these have on the lives of women as producers and consumers of wealth, health education and welfare. They advocate the adoption of a gendered theoretical perspective capable of recognising and rewarding the multifaceted contributions of women to the economy. The case studies from Africa, Latin America and the Middle East highlight different state policies and ideologies and their impact on women. The book concludes with practical proposals for politicising gender and achieving structural transformation."--BOOK JACKET

Women in Later Life will be essential reading for students on undergraduate and postgraduate courses on gender, ethnicity and later life' - Sara Arber, University of Surrey.'!what is it like to be an older person and, particularly, an older woman? This carefully crafted and wide-ranging book seeks to answer this question! The book reminds us that age is a social construct, one which profoundly disadvantages women. For minority ethnic women, where this book makes an important contribution to a largely unexplored territory, the situation is even more dire. The authors have opened up a huge area of policy, demonstrating, despite the rhetoric of government, how badly we treat our elders' - Professor Gary Craig, University of Hull.
