Murnau's interest in portraying the lives of ordinary country people, in what has been described as 'a sort of rural kammerspielfilm', goes back to his middle German period (see The Burning Earth). The production of City Girl was overtaken by the changeover to sound and was not released as the silent film prepared by Murnau that has nonetheless survived while the 67 min re-edited and partly reshot sound version has been lost. In portraying the relation between city and country it is the city girl who is deceived by the illusion of the country whereas in the companion film, Sunrise, it is the man from the country who is dazzled by the city vamp and the lure of the metropolis
