Während Gonzague ein eher langweiliges bürgerliches Leben führt, geht Irène undurchschaubaren, doch umso lukrativeren Geschäften nach und lässt sich von niemand in die Karten ihres (Liebes- )Lebens blicken. Der Familiensonntag wird in Pierre Bosts kleinem Roman zu einem Panorama der Gefühle, wie sie in Familien nicht nur kurz vor Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkrieges unter der Oberfläche brodeln. Rivalität unter Geschwistern, Eifersucht und die Angst vor dem Tod des Vaters treten zutage - nur die Mitglieder der Familie würden sich dies nie eingestehen. 1901 in Lasalle geboren, wuchs in Le Havre auf und kam kurz nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg nach Paris. Zwischen 1924 und 1945 veröffentlichte er mehr als ein Dutzend Romane, Erzählbände und Essays. Er gehörte zu den bedeutendsten Literaten und Journalisten der Zwischenkriegszeit. Zu seinen wichtigsten Werken gehören Faillite (1928), Le scandale (1931), Porte-Malheur (1932) und Monsieur Ladmiral va bientôt mourir. Mit diesem kleinen Roman verabschiedete er sich 1945 aus der Literatur, um fortan als Drehbuchschreiber zu arbeiten. Pierre Bost starb 1975 in Paris. 1984 wurde Monsieur Ladmiral va bientôt mourir von Bertrand Tavernier unter dem Titel Ein Sonntag auf dem Lande verfilmt. Das Werk wurde bei den Filmfestspielen von Cannes mit dem Preis für die Beste Regie ausgezeichnet
