Sun gardens : cyanotypes by Anna Atkins by Larry J Schaaf( Book )

7 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 188 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Anna Atkins (1799-1871) came of age in Victorian England, a particularly fertile environment for learning and scientific discovery. Guided by her father, a prominent scientist, Atkins was inspired by William Henry Fox Talbot to take up photography and was friends with Sir John Herschel, who invented the cyanotype photographic process in 1842. The next year, Atkins began making cyanotypes in an effort to illustrate and distribute information about her herbarium. The result was 'Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions', the first book to be illustrated with photographs. A decade later, she and her friend Anne Dixon expanded their visual inquiry to flowering plants, feathers, and other subjects. This volume is a revised and expanded edition of a long out-of-print monograph that first secured Atkins's place in the history of photography. It draws upon years of careful research and sets Atkins and her work in the proper context. Supplementary texts shed new light on her productions and on the cyanotype process, which is still used by artists today. The photographs themselves-ethereal, deeply hued, and wonderfully intricate-are brought to life with exquisite reproductions that are certain to win Atkins a new generation of followers. Exhibition: The New York Public Library, New York, USA (18.10.2018-03.05.2019)
Ode to Anna Atkins by Ginger R Burrell( Book )

1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Ode to Anna Atkins is my homage to women artists in general and Anna Atkins in particular. Anna Atkins was raised by her scientist father and was encouraged from an early age in making images with a scientific theme - first in drawings and engravings and later in photography. Her friendship with William Fox Talbot gave her access to the 'photogenic drawing technique' in which an object is placed on paper coated with light sensitive emulsion (now called cyanotype.). Some say that Anna Atkins was the first female photographer."--Prospectus

Photographs of British Algae. Cyanotype impressions. [The preface signed: A.A., i.e. Anna Atkins.] by Anna Atkins( Book )

4 editions published in 1843 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Issued as 12 parts, 1843-1850, and 3 volumes, 1850-1853. Parts are numbered "Part I" to "Part XII" on contents leaf of each; volumes are numbered "Vol. I" to "Vol. III" on volume title page of each. Part I contains 4 leaves of photographically reproduced text (work title page, dedication, preface, contents of part) and 8 leaves of images; parts II-XII each contain 1 leaf of text (contents) and 12 leaves of images, for a total of 15 leaves of text and 140 images. When mode of issue changed to volume format, most of the previously issued images were meant to be incorporated with new images created for volumes I and II, with volume tables of contents cancelling those in the parts and some cancellations of individual images, while most images in vol. III were newly created. In all, the 3 volumes were meant to contain 14 leaves of text (work and volume title pages, dedication, preface, volume tables of contents, errata) and at least 389 images, as called for in volume tables of contents. Each recipient was responsible for the collation and binding of his own copy, with the result that extant copies vary greatly in content and makeup; see Schaaf, pages 8-9
Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions (Sir John Herschel's Copy) by Anna Atkins( Book )

2 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Shortly after William Henry Fox Talbot announced his invention of photography in 1839, the dedicated amateur botanist Anna Atkins, daughter of a prominent British scientist, began to experiment with the new medium. In 1843 she turned to her friend Sir John Herschel?s recently discovered cyanotype process to publish her growing collection of native seaweeds?a daring way to introduce photography into book illustration. At regular intervals over the next decade, Atkins printed and issued these bracingly modern, deeply-hued photograms to her?botanical friends? in the form of hand-stitched fascicles of a book she entitled Photographs of 'British Algæ: Cyanotype Impressions'.0The first book to be illustrated by photography and the earliest sustained application of photography to science, British Algæ is a landmark in the histories of publishing and photography. Of the nearly two dozen substantially complete or partial copies known to exist, each is distinct in its appearance and often in its number and arrangement of plates. The set of 13 parts she gave to Sir John Herschel?now in the Spencer Collection of The New York Public Library?is especially important and was carefully preserved by generations of the Herschel family exactly as Sir John received it. This sumptuous facsimile edition reproduces the recto and verso of each plate, presenting the work as its creator intended: as bound volumes to lingered over, studied and admired, page by extraordinary page
