The Cambridge introduction to the old Norse-Icelandic saga by Margaret Clunies Ross( Book )

15 editions published between 2010 and 2012 in English and held by 467 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The medieval Norse-Icelandic saga is one of the most important European vernacular literary genres of the Middle Ages. This Introduction to the saga genre outlines its origins and development, its literary character, its material existence in manuscripts and printed editions, and its changing reception from the Middle Ages to the present time. Its multiple sub-genres - including family sagas, mythical-heroic sagas and sagas of knights - are described and discussed in detail, and the world of medieval Icelanders is powerfully evoked. The first general study of the Old Norse-Icelandic saga to be written in English for some decades, the Introduction is based on up-to-date scholarship and engages with current debates in the field. With suggestions for further reading, detailed information about the Icelandic literary canon, and a map of medieval Iceland, this book is aimed at students of medieval literature and assumes no prior knowledge of Scandinavian languages"--

Old Icelandic literature and society( Book )

16 editions published between 2000 and 2009 in English and held by 360 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This is the first book to provide a comprehensive account of Old Icelandic literature within its social setting and across a range of genres. An international team of specialists examines the ways in which the unique social experiment in Iceland, a kingless society without an established authority structure, inspired a wealth of innovative writing composed in the Icelandic vernacular. Icelanders explored their uniqueness through poetry, mythologies, metrical treatises, religious writing, and through saga, a new literary genre which textualised their history and incorporated oral traditions in a written form. The book shows that Icelanders often used their textual abilities to gain themselves political and intellectual advantage, not least in the period when the state's freedom came to an end."--Jacket

The pre-Christian religions of the North : research and reception by Margaret Clunies Ross( Book )

12 editions published in 2018 in English and Dutch and held by 70 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book reveals the various ways people have understood or reacted to Scandinavian paganism from the Middle Ages to today. Over more than a thousand years since pre-Christian religions were actively practised, European, and later contemporary, society has developed a fascination with the beliefs of northern Europe before the arrival of Christianity, which have been the subject of a huge range of popular and scholarly theories, interpretations, and uses. Indeed, the pre-Christian religions of the North have exerted a phenomenal influence on modern culture, appearing in everything from the names of days of the week to Hollywood blockbusters. Scholarly treatments have been hardly less varied. Theories, from the Middle Ages until today, have depicted these pre-Christian religious systems as dangerous illusions, the works of Satan, representatives of a lost proto-Indo-European religious culture, a form of "natural" religion, and even as a system non-indigenous in origin, derived from cultures outside Europe. The "Research and Reception" strand of the "Pre-Christian Religions of the North" project establishes a definitive survey of the current and historical uses and interpretations of pre-Christian mythology and religious culture, tracing the many ways in which people both within and outside Scandinavia have understood and been influenced by these religions, from the Christian Middle Ages to contemporary media of all kinds. The present volume (I) traces the reception down to the early nineteenth century, while Volume II takes up the story from c.1830 down to the present day and the burgeoning of interest across a diversity of new as well as old media--Publisher's statement
The Norse Muse in Britain : 1750-1820 by Margaret Clunies Ross( Book )

5 editions published in 1998 in English and Italian and held by 60 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Poetry in fornaldarsögur( Book )

3 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 42 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Poetry in fornaldarsögur is a new edition of the corpus of poetry, mostly in eddic metres, from Icelandic mythical-heroic sagas. This volume contains all the anonymous poetry from medieval Icelandic mythical-heroic sagas (fornaldarsögur), such as Heiðreks saga, Gautreks saga, and other sagas set in prehistoric Scandinavia and more exotic locations. This diverse body of poetry is treated here for the first time as significant in its own right rather than as an appendage to the Poetic Edda. It also contains a new edition with extensive notes of Gunnlaugr Leifsson's Merlínuspá, based on Geoffrey of Monmouth's Prophecies of Merlin, as well as the little-known but entertaining Skaufhala bálkr by Svartr á Hofstöðum, a mock-heroic poem about a fox"--Publisher's description
