John McComb architectural drawing collection by John McComb( Visual )

in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The collection features ca. 150 elevations, sections, plans, and detail drawings for New York City Hall, his foremost work. Joseph F. Mangin drew the French Neoclassical designs for their joint 1802 competition entry, which McComb developed during the decade-long construction. Few of the collection's other drawings are fully identified commissions, although the original captions provide such interesting clues as "Panopticon plan for a prison for juvenile offenders, 200 ́diamr. To be divided into six classes according to their good behaviour." Among the 100 church designs, 34 have been associated with specific New York City churches. Another 60 to 70 drawings depict townhouses and country houses. The 50 drawings for public buildings portray Government House, Park Theatre, Princeton Theological Seminary, Rickett's Equestrian Amphitheatre, Vanderlyn's Cyclorama Rotunda, the Washington Benevolent Society headquarters, an insane asylum, a hospital, and other structures. The few commercial buildings include a bakery, hotel, and sugar refinery. The 40 engineering drawings feature a lighthouse at Cape Henry, Virginia; sewers; machinery; and fortifications. In addition, there are some 60 decorative designs; studies and school problems; sketches of buildings designed by other people; hand-drawn copies of real estate maps; drawings attributed to John McComb, Sr., to his relatives, and to Jacob Lawrence; and engravings by Giambattista Piranesi and others
