Cognitive semantics : meaning and cognition by Jens S Allwood( )

31 editions published between 1998 and 1999 in English and Italian and held by 1,565 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Toward the end of the 20th century, there is both a dissatisfaction with existing formal semantic theories and a wish to preserve insights from other semantic traditions. Cognitive semantics, the latest of the major trends which have dominated the century, attempts to do this by focusing on meaning as a cognitive phenomenon. This book provides different perspectives on meaning as a cognitive phenomenon. Jens Allwood presents an approach where meaning is analyzed in terms of context sensitive cognitive operations. Peter Gärdenfors examines the relationship between cognitive semantics and standard formal extensional and intensional semantics. Peter Harder discusses the relation between functionalism and cognitive semantics. Sören Sjöström and +ke Viberg extend a cognitive semantic approach to new empirical domains like vision and physical contact. Elisabeth Engberg Pedersen extends the use of cognitive semantics even further in order to analyze deaf sign language and, finally, Kenneth Holmqvist and Jordan Zlatev discuss two different possibilities of implementing a cognitive semantic approach using computer programs
Logic in linguistics by Jens S Allwood( Book )

61 editions published between 1977 and 2006 in English and Undetermined and held by 731 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An elementary introduction to formal logic, particularly intended for linguists and others interested in languages. Concepts and theories developed within formal logic for the study of artificial languages have for some time been fruitfully applied to the study of natural languages and some knowledge of them is necessary for students of linguists (especially semantics). with this need in mind the authors offer a clear, succinct and basic introduction to set theory, inference, propositional and predicate logic, deduction, modal and intensional logic, and various concomitant extensions of these. There is a discussion too of the relation between linguistics and logical analysis and between logic and natural language. The authors see increasing scope for co-operation between logicians and linguistics in studying the structure of language, and it is the overall aim of the book to promote this co-operation

Second language acquisition by adult immigrants : a field manual by Jens S Allwood( Book )

11 editions published between 1982 and 1983 in English and Undetermined and held by 45 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The field manual for a series of coordinated studies of the spontaneous acquisition of a second language by adult immigrant workers provides a theoretical and practical framework for the entire project and a source of information about it for other researchers. Chapters 1 and 2 describe the project's objectives and organization. Chapter 3 reviews previous work on the spontaneous acquisition of language in the chosen target countries (France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Great Britain) by adult learners. In chapters 4-8 the research topics are discussed in detail: understanding, misunderstanding, and breakdown; the thematic structure of utterances; processes in the developing vocabulary; and reference to people, space, and time. The chapters discuss why the topics are thought to be important, what the specific hypotheses are, how they arise from previous work, and how they are to be approached. Chapter 8 outlines data collection techniques and ways of combining them in this research, with a sample plan of the actual work each team is to accomplish during the project's data collection phase. The final chapter examines the practical, logistical problems and the ethics of the research. A postscript describes the project's progress after eighteen months, and an appendix gives an overall scheme for analyzing interactions. A list of references and author and subject indexes to the text are also included. (Mse)
