The returns of Odysseus : colonization and ethnicity by Irad Malkin( )

16 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 2,398 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Irad Malkin contributes here to the current lively discussion of encounters among Greeks and non-Greeks. Through the prism of myths, he argues, notions of ethnicity and collective identity were articulated. Focussing in particular on myths about Odysseus and other heroes who visited foreign lands on their mythical voyages homeward after the Trojan War, he shows how these Return-myths influenced actual encounters during the time of early exploration and colonization in the western Mediterranean
Myth and territory in the Spartan Mediterranean by Irad Malkin( )

26 editions published between 1994 and 2004 in English and French and held by 2,257 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book discusses Greek attitudes to settlement and territory as articulated through myths and cults. The emphasis is less on the poetic, timeless qualities of the myths, than on their historical function in the archaic and Classical periods, covering the spectrum from explicit charter myths legitimating conquest, displacement and settlement, to the 'precedent-setting' and even aetiological myths, rendering new landscapes 'Greek'. This spectrum is broadest in the world of Spartan colonisation - the Spartan Mediterranean - where the greater challenges to territorial possession and Sparta's acute self-awareness of her relative national youthfulness elicited explicit responses in the form of charter myths. The concept of a Spartan Mediterranean, in contrast to the image of a land-locked Sparta, is a major contribution of this book
Panhellenes at Methone : graphê in late geometric and protoarchaic Methone, Macedonia (ca. 700 BCE) by Jenny Strauss Clay( )

15 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 1,075 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The papers in this volume discuss the unique, and so far unprecedented for Macedonia, 191 sherds from Methone in Pieria, dated to ca 700 BCE, which bear inscriptions, graffiti, and (trade)marks inscribed, incised, scratched and rarely painted. The uniqueness of these finds is multidimensional, as it relates to archaeology, ancient history, Greek literature, and the study of the Greek dialects

Leaders and masses in the Roman world : studies in honor of Zvi Yavetz by Jacob Malkin( Book )

12 editions published in 1995 in 3 languages and held by 333 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

It is largely thanks to Zvi Yavetz that the Roman plebs has become salonfahig. In numerous important studies Yavetz has focused his - and our - attention on the problem of the relationship between the ruler and the masses of the ruled. Thus, it seemed natural to choose various aspects of this relationship as the topic of a volume in his honor. The articles here contributed by thirteen eminent friends and colleagues deal with historical and theoretical questions of the relationship between 'the one' and 'the many', covering a period from the second century BC, through the times of the Late Republic and the Principate, to Late Antiquity and, finally, to an intriguing view at modern totalitarianism as perceived from an Enlightenment perspective
Greek and Roman networks in the Mediterranean by Irad Malkin( Book )

16 editions published between 2009 and 2013 in English and held by 221 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

How useful is the concept of "network" for historical studies and the ancient world in particular? Using theoretical models of social network analysis, this book illuminates aspects of the economic, social, religious, and political history of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds. Bringing together some of the most active and prominent researchers in ancient history, this book moves beyond political institutions, ethnic, and geographical boundaries in order to observe the ancient Mediterranean through a perspective of network interaction. It employs a wide range of approaches, and to examine relationships and interactions among various social entities in the Mediterranean. Chronologically, the book extends from the early Iron Age to the late Antique world, covering the Mediterranean between Antioch in the east to Massalia (Marseilles) in the west. This book was published as two special issues in Mediterranean Historical Review

1 edition published in 2020 in French and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Euboica : l'Eubea e la presenza euboica in Calcidica e in Occidente by Alexander Mazarakis Ainian( )

1 edition published in 2014 in Italian and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
