Marianne, a plain, overweight woman, leads an uneventful life as a mortician's assistant. When not dressing corpses, she consumes large amounts of food and watches late-night television. One day during her commute she is beguiled by the voice of the conductor announcing the station stops. Catching a glimpse of Eisi, Marianne takes time off from her macabre job to devote herself full time first to stalking, then seducing her beloved. Cornering him at a subway candy machine, she draws him into a shortlived affair. Adlon's idiosyncratic romantic comedy is enhanced by the contributions of New York cinematographer Johanna Heer whose flamboyant neon lighting provides a barometer of the main characters' feelings and transformations
Céleste by Percy Adlon( Visual )

22 editions published between 1981 and 2016 in 4 languages and held by 125 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Based on the memoirs of Celeste Albaret, this film is the story of the simple country girl who met the author Marcel Proust as the wife of his favorite taxi-driver and remained to tend him single-handedly through the last nine years of his life. Celeste was his cook, companion, secretary, friend and surrogate mother during the creation of "Remembrance of Things Past." The film comes close to being Proustian in its attention to details of sound, light and movement as well as to the rituals of a prescribed daily routine. Virtually the entire film takes place inside Proust's apartment and the cork-lined room where the author slept during the day and worked on his manuscripts at night. (Circulates)
