Broken covenant : American foreign policy and the crisis between the U.S. and Israel by
Moshe Arens(
Book
)
11 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 563 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In this no-holds-barred account, Moshe Arens, Israel's former Foreign Minister and Defense Minister, lays bare the harsh realities of U.S.-Israeli relations during the tumultuous period of the Palestinian uprising known as the Intifada and the climactic Persian Gulf War. During those years, diplomatic relations between Jerusalem and Washington plummeted, as President George Bush's administration, in pursuit of U.S. interests in the Middle East, interfered in Israeli domestic politics, refused Israel vital military intelligence during the Gulf War, and attempted to bring down Israel's democratically elected government

The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising has become a symbol of heroism throughout the world. A short time before the uprising began, Pawel Frenkel addressed a meeting of the Jewish Military fighters: Of course we will fight with guns in our hands, and most of us will fall. But we will live on in the lives and hearts of future generations and in the pages of their history ... We will die before our time but we are not doomed. We will be alive for as long as Jewish history lives! On the eve of Passover, April 19, 1943, German forces entered the Warsaw ghetto equipped with tanks, flame throwers, and machin

In defense of Israel : a memoir of a political life by
Moshe Arens(
)
6 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 45 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The revealing memoir of one of Israeli's most respected statesmen. Moshe Arens is one of the last surviving members of the founding generation of Israelis. He is a political insider who has worked with every Israeli prime minister from Menachem Begin to Benjamin Netanyahu, serving in a variety of important positions, including foreign minister and defense minister. He has also enjoyed an exceptionally close life-long relationship with the United States: he attended high school in New York and colleges in Massachusetts and California, married an American, and served as Israel's ambassador to the United States. In this memoir, Arens recounts his early role in the birth of Israel and developing Israel's aerospace industry, followed by a long and distinguished political career that included service at the very top of Israel's government for the better part of three decades. Arens advocated relentlessly throughout his political career for his vision of an Israel strong enough to withstand all challenges in its volatile neighborhood. In Defense of Israel vividly recounts the many battles Arens fought in the political arena, sometimes successfully, sometimes not. The latter included his strong opposition to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's withdrawal from Gaza and parts of the West Bank--an action that led to the takeover of Gaza by Hamas. Anyone interested in Israel's place within the contemporary Middle East, including Israel's relationship with the United States, will find this memoir informative, even eye-opening, and often provocative."--

Degalim me-ʻal ha-Geṭo : sipuro shel mered Geṭo Ṿarshah by
Moshe Arens(
Book
)
2 editions published in 2009 in Hebrew and held by 35 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Describes the Warsaw ghetto uprising in detail, emphasizing the role of the Revisionist Irgun Zva'i Yehudi (Jewish Military Union, ŻZW), led by Paweł Frenkel and his deputy, Leon Rodal. Notes that, for ideological reasons, this group did not join Anielewicz's and Zuckerman's Irgun Yehudi Lohem (Jewish Fighting Organization, ŻOB). Describes preparations for the uprising made by both groups after the deportations of January 1943, when the first acts of resistance took place. Although there was much conflict between the groups, it was agreed that the ŻZW would defend Muranowski Square, where the most intense fighting took place in April. The Jewish and the Polish flags were hoisted atop the tallest building in the square and defended by members of the ŻZW until all the houses in the area were burned by the Germans under orders from General Jürgen Stroop, who was desperate to end the uprising. The fighting continued sporadically until the middle of May. Most of the ŻZW fighters were killed during or shortly after the uprising. Frenkel was killed on the "Aryan side" in June, after having escaped, like many others, through the sewage system. Appendices on pp. 235-290 contain reports on the ghetto uprising written by General Stroop

Politics of memory : the Israeli underground's struggle for inclusion in the national pantheon and military commemoration by
Udi Lebel(
)
3 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The production and management of public memory in Israel has been politicized through the efforts of successive Israeli governments. In the nascent years of the Israeli state, the ruling Labour Party sought to influence the collective memory of the people through selective production and collective assimilation of cultural practices associated with bereavement and commemoration. In tandem, efforts were made to fashion a ranking order of heroism and sacrifice through various means of memorialisation. Politics of Memory focuses on the struggle for inclusion in the domain of military commemoration by those barred from its patrimony and examines the effect of this struggle for the Israeli governments' legitimacy. A thought provoking study of the inclusion and exclusion processes of military commemoralization, and the effects of this for Israeli national identity, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of Israeli history, military studies and politics in general"
