A collection of documents concerning the Reichsvertretung from the stages of its establishment in 1932-33 as a voluntary federation of Jewish communities and organizations, to its re-organization in February 1939 as the centralized, all-inclusive and obligatory Reichsvereinigung. Includes appeals to the Jewish public, memoranda and petitions submitted to the authorities, correspondence, protocols of meetings, committee reports and guidelines on aid to emigration, social welfare, education and culture; articles and editorials from the Jewish press; and evaluations by the SD. Each document is accompanied by an introduction and notes. The documents were gathered from scattered archives; the central archives of the Reichsvertretung are lost. The introduction (pp. 1-31) traces the history of the Reichsvertretung, stressing its democratic, pluralistic character. Argues that while for the Nazi authorities it was useful to be able to deal with one central Jewish organization, the aim of the Reichsvertretung was to enable as many Jews as possible to escape Nazi persecution, and to secure a tolerable and dignified existence for those remaining
