"One of the most prolific applied mathematicians of the mid-twentieth century, Prof Lin is a highly respected professor at MIT. These volumes, a collection of Prof Lin's papers from 1943 to 1986, is an attempt to exhibit a historical perception of the development of ideas in the following areas of research: Stability of Parallel Flows, Turbulence, and Spiral Structure of Galaxies. Prof Lin has written short comments and personal recollections on the development of thinking in these subjects. In addition to research papers, there are two essays dealing with the basic thinking that underlies the development of applied mathematics as an academic discipline in USA. Other topics of interest are Aerodynamics, Liquid Helium, Solid State Physics, Plasticity and Magnetohydrodynamics. About 51 papers are included in these two volumes."

"As a country with 5000 years of history, China has made tremendous contributions to astronomy. The 21st century marks the beginning of a new era for the astronomy of that country. This is the proceedings of a conference held to honour Prof C C Lin — the leading Chinese astronomer in the world academic community — on his 80th birthday."--Publisher's website

Hydrodynamic instability. [Proceedings of the Thirteenth Symposium in Applied Mathematics of the American Mathematical Society by Garrett Birkhoff( Book )

13 editions published in 1962 in English and Undetermined and held by 44 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This is the saga of the Fox (or Mesquakie) Indians' struggle to maintain their identity in the face of colonial New France during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries." "The Foxes occupied central Wisconsin, where for a long time they had warred with the Sioux and, more recently, had opposed the extension of the French firearm-and-fur trade with their western enemies. Caught between the Sioux anvil and the French hammer, the Foxes enlisted other tribes' support and maintained their independence until the late 1720s. Then the French treacherously offered them peace before launching a campaign of annihilation against them. The Foxes resisted valiantly, but finally were overwhelmed and took sanctuary among the Sac Indians, with whom they are closely associated to this day."--Jacket
A general integral form of the boundary-layer equation for imcompressible flow with an application to the calculation of the separation point of turbulent boundary layers by Neal Tetervin( Book )

6 editions published between 1950 and 1951 in English and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A general integral form of the boundary-layer equation, valid for either laminar or turbulent incompressible boundary-layer flow, is derived. By using the experimental finding that all velocity profiles of the turbulent layer form essentially a single-parameter family, the general equation is changed to an equation for the space rate of change of the velocity-profile shape parameter. The lack of precise knowledge concerning the surface shear and the distribution of the sheaing stress across turbulent boundary layers prevented the attainment of a reliable method for calculating the behavior of turbulent boundary layers

On the attached curved shock in front of a sharp-nosed axially symmetrical body placed in a uniform stream by S. F Shen( Book )

2 editions published in 1951 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The flow behind the attached curved shock near the nose of an axially symmetrical body placed in a uniform stream is investigated by perturbation from the Taylor-Maccoll conical solution. The first-order perturbation yields the ratio of the initial radii of curvature of the shock and the body. Numerical results are presented for initial semivertex angles of 10, 20, and 30 degrees, up to a Mach number around 5. A negative ratio of curvatures is again obtained at low Mach number, as in the two-dimenational case. Higher-order perturbations indicate that the a regular shock shape might lead to a logarithmic singularity at the nose of the body
An analytical determination of the flow behind a symmetrical curved shock in a uniform stream by C. C Lin( Book )

2 editions published in 1951 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A power-series-expansion method is used to determine the flow pattern behind a detached curved shock in a uniform stream. The limitations of the method are discussed and earlier applications are extended to include more terms and to give improved accuracy. The analysis is carried out in a manner applicable to both the two-dimensional and the axially symmetrical cases. The particular example with free-stream Mach number 1.7 is computed in the axially symmetrical case by using a fourth-degree polynomial to represent the flow and comparison is made with experimental results
