Neues Museum by Friederike von Rauch( Book )

9 editions published in 2009 in German and held by 144 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Neues Museum - an important mid-nineteenth century example of Neoclassical architecture and the centerpiece of Berlin's Museum Island - was badly damaged during World War II. From 1997-2009, British architect David Chipperfield worked to restore the structure - which was originally completed by Friedrich August Stueler in 1859 - to its pre-war function. Located behind the Altes Museum, the space housed the Egyptian Collection." "Chipperfield's controversial plans followed a principle of conservation (or amalgamation) rather than reconstruction; he preserved the skeleton of the original building, with its elaborate finishes, attractive brickwork, frescoes and ornamentation, merging and contrasting these characteristics with his own subtle interpolations of clean white lines and quiet geometrical structures. The results are astounding, setting new standards in the field and opening up exciting possibilities for museum conversions." "This volume celebrates Chipperfield's work in a series of beautiful images by the Berlin-based architectural photographer Friederike von Rauch. Von Rauch is well known for her unusual and exacting approach to architectural photography: eschewing digital technology and only using natural light, she presents a crisp and vibrant series of images that eloquently tell the story of Chipperfield's unorthodox but successful restoration."--Jacket

Sir David Alan Chipperfield CBE, RA, RDI, RIBA is one of Britains most lauded architects. Uncompromisingly modernist in outlook, his practice is driven by a consistent philosophical approach, rather than a house style. Chipperfield first made his reputation in Japan in the 1980s. Among his early projects in England that revealed his rigorous and elemental approach to design included a shop for Issey Miyake on Londons Sloane Street in 1983, and a house for the fashion photographer Nick Knight. Later, Chipperfield designed the award-winning "River and Rowing Museum" in Henley-on-Thames using green oak cladding, concrete and glass. Since then, Chipperfield has moved on to become one of the commanding figures in the design of cultural and civic buildings across Europe and in the United States. Chipperfield was the architect for the reconstruction of the destroyed Neues Museum in Berlin, which reopened in October 2009. In addition to the Neues Museum, Chipperfield was the architect behind Turner Contemporary in Margate

Sergison Bates by David Chipperfield( Book )

16 editions published between 2002 and 2005 in 4 languages and held by 63 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This issue of 2G features a pair of architects who are interested neither in pursuing the spectacular nor in concentrating their energies in the evolution of strategies to win commissions in the commercial market. Instead they would like the opportunity to practice architecture that has social relevance and physical meaning. Inspired by such architects as Moneo, Siza, Souto de Moura, Herzog & de Meuron, Fretton, Caruso St. John, and the Smithsons, they have accumulated both a convincing way of working and talking about architecture and an admirable body of work

"In 2014, Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu were named designers of the year by Wallpaper, largely for work they had created under the name of Neri & Hu Design and Research Office. The duo founded the firm in 2004 in Shanghai, with an additional office in London, and for more than a decade now it has been the source of incredibly creative, innovative architectural designs for projects around the globe. The first book ever published on the firm, Neri & Hu Design and Research Office presents a broad selection of its work in architecture and product design. The projects covered include seven renovations in Shanghai; three retail spaces, including Neri & Hu's own office building; beautiful designs for a tea service, chair, and picnic basket; and several major ongoing projects, including a private residence in Florida and hotel renovations in London and Shanghai"--Publisher's website

On planning : a thought experiment( Book )

This publication is the result of a year-long dialogue between David Chipperfield and Simon Kretz. Its aim is to positively affect the future of urban developments, providing a manifesto for a relational, collective and diverse future for our cities. Using the Bishopsgate goods yard site in East London as a case study, this project highlights the conditions under which an ideal urban development project could flourish. The conclusions reached through this exercise demonstrate how future large-scale developments elsewhere could have more positive urban impact, both at the scale of the neighbourhood and the wider metropolis

The catalogue presents some of David Chipperfield Architect's current work, that is either recently completed, or in progress. We hope to expose in a more open manner, not a glossy presentation of an overview of our work, but a more open explanation of the work of the architect. This does not mean that the aesthetics of presentation are avoided, rather they are balanced by an attempt to communicate thoughts and concerns that are still in our minds and are part of our process. In order to emphasise this, each project team has been responsible for developing their own installation. We also want to avoid the idea that this process is anything but messy. The development of ideas is not consistent from project to project. Every process is subject to different possibilities and limits. Some projects develop intensely through a concentrated process of competition while others evolve through changes in circumstances and demands. Some are elaborated through sketches and modifications and some evolve through a more mechanical process of revision and the examination of alternatives
