One of the major works of German silent cinema, Murnau's class drama depicts the fall of the respected, aging, hotel doorman of a posh 1920s Berlin hotel, who is cruelly stripped of his position and reduced to a bathroom attendant, before his fortunes turn and he becomes a millionaire. The film was groundbreaking for its expressive, mobile camera work, which imparts information visually, without subtitles. As the diabolical Mephisto, Emil Jannings (The Last Laugh) delivers a performance of operatic scale and intensity, by turns charming, comical, and horrific
3 silent classics by Josef von Sternberg( Visual )

5 editions published in 2010 in English and No Linguistic content and held by 219 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Vienna-born, New York-raised Josef von Sternberg directed some of the most influential, stylish dramas ever to come out of Hollywood. Though best known for his star-making collaborations with Marlene Dietrich, von Sternberg began his career during the final years of the silent era, dazzling audiences and critics with his film's dark visions and innovative cinematography. The titles in this collection, made on the cusp of the sound age, are three of von Sternberg's greatest works, gritty evocations of gangster life (Underworld), the Russian Revolution (The Last Command), and working-class desperation (The Docks of New York) made into shadowy movie spectacle. Criterion is proud to present these long unavailable classics of American cinema, each with two musical scores."--Container

Ohm Krüger by Hans Steinhoff( Visual )

16 editions published between 1941 and 2013 in German and English and held by 62 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This propagandistic epic, seven years in the making, was Goebbels' initial attempt to equal Gone with the wind. It is a heroic portrait of the Boer statesman who recounts his life story as he lay dying in a Swiss hospital. His sons, Jan and Adrian, voice opposing views concerning the validity of their father's struggles during the Boer Wars. Although their ideological debate is handled with some skill, the primary purpose of the film was to stir anti-British feeling. The villainous English incite the African tribespeople by distributing guns during a mission service and to the strains of "Onward Christian soldiers." They feed rotten meat to Boer women and children (in a scene extracted from Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin) and incarcerate them in the massive concentration camps they have established on South African soil. The viewer is informed that 26,000 women and children were murdered. Ohm Krüger was selected Best Foreign Film at the Venice Festival and designated the first Film of the Nation at home. In an elaborate ceremony, Goebbels awarded its star Emil Jannings the "Ring of Honor of the German Cinema."
