Multiple personality; an experimental investigation into the nature of human individuality by Boris Sidis( Book )

43 editions published between 1904 and 2010 in English and Undetermined and held by 467 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book looks at multiple personality through the lens of individuality. Each part deals with a specific aspect of multiple personality: personality, double personality, and finally, consciousness and multiple personality. The work of Parts I and III covers a period of eight years. Out of the material accumulated by Dr. Sidis and his collaborators, some experiments and observations of functional psychopathic cases have been utilized in the last part of this volume. The authors note that the case of double personality described in Part II is of great interest and is specially recommended to the reader's attention. This case was investigated in the Pathological Institute of the New York State Hospitals. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2004 APA, all rights reserved)

Psychopathological researches; studies in mental dissociation by Boris Sidis( Book )

18 editions published between 1902 and 2009 in English and Undetermined and held by 150 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The present researches form a series of cases the investigation of which is undertaken with the object of studying the problems presented by the phenomena of functional psychosis. Out of a mass of material we have selected a few cases typical of many others, each case standing for a type. As much as possible we have tried to avoid theories and principles and give simply a resume of the facts and experiments. The cases are more in the nature of laboratory researches, each case standing on its own individual merits; they are all, however, intimately interconnected, representing various phases and stages of the processes of mental dissociation. The methods of work of this series have all of them been developed in the psychopathological laboratory, --the researches being carried on in the laboratory or at other places under its direction. We sincerely hope that the psychologist, psychopathologist, psychiatrist, and the medical man of science who may happen to be interested in this line of research will realize the obstacles and difficulties encountered in the investigations of psychopathic cases, and thus come to realize the necessary shortcomings pertinent to the very nature of psychopathological research work. Symptomatology, psychognosis, and diagnosis of psychopathic diseases by Boris Sidis( Book )

14 editions published between 1914 and 2009 in English and held by 109 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

To be able to recognize the mental and to be able to differentiate it from the purely physical is certainly of the highest consequence to the general practitioner, even if the treatment may fall into the hands of specialists who have devoted their life to such work. The reason why all kinds of occult cures have become so rampant in this country is because the medical profession ignores the mental side of the patient. The medical student, the practitioner, is in sore need of a training in psychology, normal and abnormal. The medical profession must realize the importance of a working knowledge of subconscious mental affections. More than one-half of the patients that come to the general practitioner are cases of psychopathic disorders. An early recognition and appropriate treatment would not only vindicate the professional man, but would help the patient at the right moment and prevent him from becoming a chronic invalid. The best way is to study the case, know it by the description of its symptoms, and dig deeply into the conscious and subconscious sides of the patient's character and life history. In short, we must learn to know the workings of the patient's mind, we must learn his ideals of life, his attitude towards man and to the world, his actions and his total reactions in his adaptations to his environment. In other words, we must learn to understand not only the patient's physical, nervous, and mental condition, not only his history and the development of his present trouble, but we must learn his personality as a whole, his attitude to his external surroundings, his Weltanschauung so to say. The knowledge thus obtained of the patient's psychic life is what I regard as Psychognosis. In other words, psychognosis is of importance not only from a theoretical, psychopathological standpoint, but is of the utmost consequence to a right, practical, psychotherapeutic procedure and treatment. "About twenty-five years ago I published in my Psychology of Suggestion a series of experiments on Normal and Abnormal Suggestibility, carried on at various laboratories including my own laboratory. I developed the psycho-physiological theory of the subconscious, traced the causation and nature of subconscious activities, and worked out the laws of normal and abnormal suggestibility. The following pertains to our present subject: The nervous centers of man's nervous system, if classified as to function, may be divided into inferior and superior. The inferior centers are characterized by reflex and automatic activities. A stimulus excites the peripheral nerve-endings of some sense-organ. At once a nerve-current is set up in the afferent nerves. The current in its turn stimulates a plexus of central ganglia, the nerve energy of which is set free, and is propagated along the efferent nerves towards muscles and glands,--secretions, muscular contractions and relaxations are the result; biologically regarded, various reactions and adjustments follow"--Book.
