Quantum Field Theory, Differential Operators and Scattering Theory(
Book
)
1 edition published in 1971 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
The research of this contract has covered several areas, including differential equations, harmonic analysis, functional analysis, logic, and quantum field theory. Some work has been done on the theoretical foundations of field theory while other work has been done on the classical problems in scattering theory arising from the physical situations. In harmonic analysis, questions about function spaces of analytic functions in more than one variable and classical problems in potential theory have been investigated. Tauberian theorems in their relation to number theory, and the general scope of the analytic methods of harmonic analysis in the theory of distribution of prime numbers have been considered. In Logic problems in the existence of models with automorphisms as well as general decision problems were investigated. Some recent results concern the application of automata in deciding various second order theories. Also work was done which offers hope of giving constructive estimates for problems in Diophantine Equations for which only nonconstructive methods now exist. (Author)

Decision procedures for real and padic fields(
Book
)
1 edition published in 1967 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
A decision procedure is given for the real number field which reproves a result of Tarski, and for padic fields a procedure is given to reduce problems about the field to statements concerning the residue class rings. This gives a purely effective proof of the recent results of Ax and Kochen. The methods used point up the similarity of the two cases. Thus whereas Sturm's theorem can be used in the real case, our proof yields an inductive procedure for finding roots in the padic case. Finally, the application to Artin's conjecture is discussed and it is shown that the exceptional primes are primitive recursive functions of the degree. (Author)

Predicting recidivism and crime severity in a male juvenile delinquent population using the MMPIA by
Paul J Cohen(
)
1 edition published in 2004 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
The purpose of this study was to investigate the predictive capabilities of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Instrument Adolescent version (Butcher, Williams, Graham, Archer, Tellegen, BenPorath, and Kaemmer, 1992) in determining whether adolescents will go on to commit serious crimes once they have already been introduced to the juvenile justice setting. In addition, the particular individual characteristics of the serious versus nonoffender/minor offender personality were under investigation. After stringent screening procedures, 99 of the original 181 male delinquents waiting disposition in juvenile court remained to participate in the study. Each participant was ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation to determine appropriate treatment and/or further placement. As a part of these evaluations, each participant took the MMPIA. Juvenile offense histories and number and types of offenses were gathered before administration of the MMPIA and number of days in detention and offense information was tracked for eighteen months posttest administration date via the Juvenile Tracking System. Overall, the MMPIA proved to be most successful in predicting adolescents who do not go on to seriously reoffend and it showed limited success in predicting adolescents who seriously reoffend after a period of eighteen months. One subscale on the entire MMPIA proved to be clinically significantly different between the two groups (Sc6). However, clinically relevant differences were found in sixteen other scales and subscales. Descriptions of the differences in the two groups are discussed, in addition to implications of these findings, and future research suggestions

A SYSTEMATIC TREATMENT OF THE PHENOMENON OF NONUNIQUENESS OF THE CAUCHY PROBLEM IS GIVEN. A +ROOF IS GIVEN THAT NONUNIQUENESS MUST ALWAYS HOLD WHEN CERTAIN CONDITIONS ARE VIOLATED. FOR ELLIPTIC EQUATIONS, THE DEGREE OF CONTINUITY((WHICH CAN BE OBTAINED IS DESCRIBED EXACTLY. ALSO PRESENTED IS A NEW TYPE OF NONUNIQUENES WHICH DOES NOT DEPEND UPONMULTIPLICITY OF THE CHARACTERISTICS, BUT UPON THE FACT THAT THE COEFFICIENTS OF THE PRINCIPAL PART ARE NOT REAL
