1 edition published in 2015 in Undetermined and held by 146 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Directed by Vsevolod Pudovkin Mezhrabpomfilm, 1928 Storm Over Asia forms part of Pudovkin's "revolutionary trilogy", alongside Mother (1926) and The End of St. Petersburg (1927). In 1918 a young and simple Mongol herdsman and trapper is cheated out of a valuable fox fur by a European capitalist fur trader. Ostracized from the trading post, he escapes to the hills after brawling with the trader who cheated him. In 1920 he becomes a Soviet partisan, and helps the partisans fight for the Soviets against the occupying British army. However he is captured by the British when they try to requisition cattle from the herdsmen at the same time as the commandant meets with a reincarnated Grand Lama. After the trapper is shot, the army discovers an amulet that suggests he is a direct descendant of Genghis Khan. They find him still alive, so the army restores his health and plans to use him as the head of a puppet regime. The trapper is thus thrust into prominence as he is placed in charge of the puppet government. By the end, however, the "puppet" turns against his masters in an outburst of fury

This film opens Tengiz Abuladze's trilogy (The Plea, The Wishing Tree, Repentance) about common human values. "Death of heroes, the knights of truth and good, leads the poet to the conclusion that the evil is invincible. Exhausted by struggle and privations, the poet lays down his arms. He is visited then by all of his favorite heroes. They put out candles by dipping them into a beer cup--a ritual Khevsuri gesture meaning renunciation. And only after seeing what misfortune and harm the rejection of fighting the evil results in, the poet takes up arms again"--Translated from container

Second part of Tengiz Abuladze's trilogy (The Plea, The Wishing Tree, Repentance) is based on the stories of Georgi Leonidze about his childhood. "A magically sustained fantasia about life in a Georgian village on the eve of the revolution ... The characters are eccentric, and their dreams and longings are gently indulged, from the simpleton who searches for the tree that will fulfil his wishes, to the dishevelled lady fortune-teller who promises herself the return of a long-lost lover. The central focus is a tragic love story (sweethearts denied marriage by the village elders)."--Www.timeout.com

Walking to the town along dirt roads and rocky hillsides, she ekes out a living selling yogurt. In a small, somewhat surreal Russian village, a mysterious woman is put on trial for repeatedly digging up the body of Varlam, the town's recently deceased ruler. The trial progresses, and it's learned that the woman's parents perished under Varlam's vicious, despotic reign of terror - along with many other innocents. As her ghastly revelations gradually reveal the truth about Varlam's monstrous inhumanity, the movie is transformed into a searing exposé of the brutal repressions, and heroic sacrifices, of the Soviet Union's mystery-shrouded Stalinist era

Filmen fik juryens specialpris i Cannes 1987

"The events just before, during and after World War II have little direct effect on the inhabitants of the village in Georgia where Zuriko lives. A schoolboy, Zuriko goes to the schoolhouse with his previously unlettered grandmother, who is receiving an education alongside him. He has some loyal, if slightly addled friends in the person of a myopic hunter named Illarion, and a one-eyed man named Illiko. So nearsighted is Illarion that on one occasion he shot Zuriko's dog because the took it for a rabbit. The loyalty of his friends is proven after the war, when they sell the cow they all own in order to send Zuriko to college in Tblisi."--Clarke Fountain, www.allmovie.com
