Es la primera obra literaria conservada y publicada en ocuparse de esa zona, que hoy es de Estados Unidos. La Historia de nveva Mexico trata de la expedición a esas tierras liderada por Juan de Oñate en 1598. La importancia para las letras hispánicas es múltiple, en parte por sus propios méritos y en parte por las circunstancias particulares de su creación y publicación El autor fue capitán, juez, factor de la Real Hacienda y procurador general del ejército de Oñate.
