Gunapala, reaching at the end of his youth, returns. He brings with him, cash, with which he hopes to re-open the family boutique that had closed during the war years. But his wife was attractive and much younger than him. Somakka brings the sensuality and the sophistication of the city with her to this remote southern village. The boutique is reopened. Wilson, the younger brother of Gunapala, who had been idling at home, feels that life has begun all over again and everything is going to be alright for the family. Somakka is attracted to her brother-in-law, and during a pilgrimage to invoke the blessing of the Gods, for their newly opened boutique, Somakka and Wilson become lovers. After returning home, they continue their compulsive relationship. Somakka gets the feeling that the husband knows, and for some obscure reason, turns a blind eye. There are problems brewing from the outside. The rubber plantation adjoining the compound of the boutique is planning to widen the approach road. A rival to Gunapala's family opens another tea boutique, and manages to steal the clientele away. The single bus which runs along the rural road twice a day is persuaded to make its stopover at the newly opened boutique. Gunapala's father, a proud well preserved man, goes on a collision course. Village politics enter the scene, Violence erupts. Gunapala closes the boutique and walks out of the family. Somakka is pregnant. She dies in childbirth. Wilson discovers, to his horror, that his father has had a secret affair with somakka. Deeply depressed by this shocking revelation, he disappers. On a lonely hermitage perched on a windswept rock, he seeks entry into priesthood. Gunapala comes in search of his brother and makes a confession. He himself was seeking a breakaway from Somakka. Their marriage had already begun to disintegrate when he brought her to the village. Perhaps Gunapala wanted all this to happen. Now he is stricken with guilt. From metre to melody : a musical heritage explored( Visual )

2 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

On Thursday 29th January 2009, Tissa Abeysekara, a Trustee of the National Trust-Sri Lanka, made a seminal presentation on the heritage of Sinhala music. In a remarkable production, combining the immediacy of live performance with the depth of his incomparable knowledge, Tissa traced the evolution of this musical heritage from the simple beauty of its folk roots to the richness that grew from the absorption of other great traditions and styles. This DVD is a re-creation of that event, using the voice recording of his lecture, and the performances of almost all the artists who graced his stage on that day
