And the weak suffer what they must? : Europe's crisis and America's economic future by Yanis Varoufakis( Book )

7 editions published between 2016 and 2017 in English and held by 339 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

""The strong do as they can and the weak suffer what they must."--Thucydides The fate of the global economy hangs in the balance, and Europe is doing its utmost to undermine it, to destabilize America, and to spawn new forms of authoritarianism. Europe has dragged the world into hideous morasses twice in the last one hundred years ... it can do it again. Yanis Varoufakis, the former Finance Minister of Greece, shows here that the Eurozone is a house of cards destined to fall without a radical change in direction. And, if the European Union falls apart, he argues, the global economy will not be far behind. Once America abandoned Europe in 1971 from the dollar zone, Europe's leaders decided to create a monetary union of 18 nations without control of their own money, without democratic accountability, and without a government to support the Central Bank. This bizarre economic super-power was equipped with none of the shock absorbers necessary to contain a financial crisis, while its design ensured that, when it came, the crisis would be massive. When disaster hit in 2009, Varoufakis argues that Europe turned against itself, humiliating millions of innocent citizens, driving populations to despair, and buttressing a form of bigotry unseen since the Second World War. Here, Varoufakis offers concrete policies that the rest of the world can take part in to intervene and help save Europe from impending catastrophe, and presents the ultimate case against austerity. With passionate, informative, and at times humorous prose, he warns that the implosion of an admittedly crisis-ridden and deeply irrational European capitalism should be avoided at all cost"--
The global minotaur : America, Europe, and the future of the global economy by Yanis Varoufakis( Book )

29 editions published between 2013 and 2015 in 3 languages and held by 280 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The author explodes the myth that financialization, ineffectual regulation of banks, greed and globalization were the root causes of the global economic crisis. Rather, they are symptoms of a much deeper malaise which can be traced all the way back to the Great Crash of 1929, then on through to the 1970s: the time when a 'Global Minotaur' was born. Just as the Athenians maintained a steady flow of tributes to the Cretan beast, so the 'rest of the world' began sending incredible amounts of capital to America and Wall Street. Thus, the Global Minotaur became the 'engine' that pulled the world economy from the early 1980s to 2008. Today's crisis in Europe, the heated debates about austerity versus further fiscal stimuli in the US, the clash between China's authorities and the Obama administration on exchange rates are the inevitable symptoms of the weakening Minotaur; of a global 'system' which is now as unsustainable as it is imbalanced. Going beyond this, the author lays out the options available to us for reintroducing a modicum of reason into a highly irrational global economic order
Game theory : a critical text by Shaun Hargreaves Heap( Book )

25 editions published between 1995 and 2006 in English and held by 250 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"With an uncompromising commitment to intellectual honesty, it seeks out game theory's strengths and limitations in a bid to draw out their implications for any theory of society which relies exclusively on liberal individualism. A new generation of students of game theory will grow to appreciate this superb text whilst fans of the first edition will eagerly devour this long-awaited update."--BOOK JACKET
Rational conflict by Yanis Varoufakis( Book )

8 editions published in 1991 in English and Undetermined and held by 230 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The study of economic rationality is attracting increasing attention from other disciplines as well as continuing to be the subject of debate within economics. At its heart is the notion that, in a situation of choice or confrontation, knowledge of an individual's desires and beliefs will allow their actions to be predicted. Yanis Varoufakis argues that this is an ideal abstraction which is both inapplicable and ineffective. Using examples from industrial relations, diplomacy, hostage crises and the law, he shows that it is impossible to quantify the aspirations of individuals in these conflicts, and that traditional theory ignores both the wider context and the history of similar cases

And the weak suffer what they must? : Europe, austerity and the threat to global stability by Yanis Varoufakis( Book )

16 editions published between 2016 and 2017 in 5 languages and held by 214 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The crisis in Europe is not over, it's getting worse. In this dramatic narrative of Europe's economic rise and spectacular fall, Yanis Varoufakis, former finance minister of Greece, 'the emerging rock star of Europe's anti-austerity uprising' (Telegraph), shows that the origins of the collapse go far deeper than our leaders are prepared to admit - and that we have done nothing so far to fix them. In 2008, the universe of Western finance outgrew planet Earth. When Wall Street imploded, a death embrace between insolvent banks and bankrupt states consumed Europe. Half a dozen national economies imploded and several more came close. But the storm is far from over...From the aftermath of the Second World War to the present, Varoufakis recounts how the eurozone emerged not as route to shared prosperity but as a pyramid scheme of debt with countries such as Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Spain at its bottom
Foundations of economics : a beginner's companion by Yanis Varoufakis( Book )

19 editions published between 1998 and 2005 in English and German and held by 185 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Aiming to breathe life into an often dry discipline by linking key economic concepts with wider debates and issues, this text presents brain-teasers, philosophical questions and politics in mainstream economics. The book covers the principal foundation-economics concepts and addresses in detail three main areas: consumption and choice, production and markets, and government and the state. Each is discussed in terms of what the conventional textbook says, how these ideas developed in historical and philosophical terms, and whether or not they make sense. Assumptions about economics as a discipline are challenged, and the anxieties of students are discussed
Capitalism( Visual )

3 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 110 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Capitalism has been the engine of unprecedented economic growth and social transformation. But how much do we understand about how it originated, and what makes it work? Capitalism is an ambitious but accessible six-part series that looks at both the history of ideas and the social forces that have shaped the capitalist world. Featuring interviews with some of the world's great historians, economists, anthropologists, and social critics, Capitalism questions the myth of the unfettered free market, explores the nature of debt and commodities, and retraces some of the great economic debates of the last 200 years."--Container
Economic indeterminacy : a personal encounter with the economists' peculiar nemesis by Yanis Varoufakis( Book )

17 editions published between 2013 and 2015 in English and held by 84 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume is a collection of some of the best and most influential work of Yanis Varoufakis. The chapters all address the issue of economic indeterminacy, and the place of a socialized Homo Economicus within the economy. The book addresses Varoufakis' key interpretation regarding the way in which neoclassical economics deals with the twin problems of complexity and indeterminacy. He argues that all neoclassical modelling revolves around three meta-axioms: Methodological individualism, Methodological instrumentalism and

Der globale Minotaurus Amerika und die Zukunft der Weltwirtschaft by Yanis Varoufakis( Book )

1 edition published in 2015 in Spanish and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Il terzo spazio : oltre establishment e populismo by Lorenzo Marsili( Book )

2 editions published in 2017 in Italian and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
