"Maurice Sarrail (1856-1929) est un " général politique ". Sa carrière, ses écrits, ses décisions en témoignent. Mais si cet engagement se manifeste à de très nombreuses reprises en Orient, il importe également de reconnaître qu'il fait preuve d'une grande énergie et parfois d'une réelle audace militaire. Mon commandement en Orient présente le triple intérêt de préciser la réalité des opérations conduites dans les Balkans entre 1915 et 1917 dans un difficile contexte interallié, d'éclairer la problématique délicate des crises de commandement en métropole pendant la Grande Guerre et de remettre en perspective à partir d'un cas concret tous les débats politico-militaires qui agitent la France au début du XXe siècle. Malgré leurs imperfections, leurs excès et leurs oublis, et alors que l'histoire des armées d'Orient reste trop souvent ignorée par des débats presque exclusivement franco-centrés, ces souvenirs du général Sarrail méritent d'être relus à l'aune des progrès de l'historiographie."--Page 4 of cover
