". . . focuses on gleaners, those who gather the spoils left after a harvest, as well as those who mine the trash. Some completely exist on the leavings; others turn them into art, exercise their ethics, or simply have fun. The director likens gleaning to her own profession - that of collecting images, stories, fragments of sound, light, and color."--Www.imdb.com

A chronicle of the minutes of one woman's life, Cléo from 5 to 7 is a spirited mix of vivid vérité and melodrama, featuring a score by Michel Legrand (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg) and cameos by Jean-Luc Godard and Anna Karina

Loin du Việt-Nam = Far from Vietnam by Chris Marker( Visual )

15 editions published between 1967 and 2018 in 3 languages and held by 251 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is the work of a number of filmmakers who were opposed to the U.S. involvement in Vietnam but to varying degrees and for varying reasons. The fragmentary structure of at least seventeen different sections has been shaped by Marker so that the final effect is quite open-ended and coherent. At the centre is the sense of European impotence in the context of the war
La Pointe-Courte( Visual )

6 editions published in 2007 in French and held by 238 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The great Agnes Varda's film career began with this graceful, penetrating study of a marriage on the rocks, set against the backdrop of a small Mediterranean fishing village. Both a stylized depiction of the complicated relationship between a married couple and a documentary-like look at the daily struggles of the locals, Varda's discursive, gorgeously filmed debut was radical enough to later be considered one of the progenitors of the coming French new wave
Cinevardaphoto( Visual )

1 edition published in 2010 in French and held by 183 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"From Agnès Varda comes the wonderful Cinevardaphoto, a triptych of short films exploring the power and vitality of the photograph. In Ydessa, the bears, and etc., Varda discovers a haunting exhibit of found photos; in each one, a teddy bear. With Ulysses, she deconstructs a picture from her early career as a photographer, while ... Salut les cubains uses still photos to capture the spirit of the Cuban Revolution's early days."--Container
Les plages d'Agnès = The beaches of Agnès by Agnès Varda( Visual )

26 editions published between 2008 and 2011 in 3 languages and held by 181 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An autobiographical reflection on art, life and the movies from director Agnès Varda."Varda takes beaches as her point of departure, and weaves photographs, vintage footage, film clips, and present-day sequences into a memorable voyage through her life, during which she confronts the joy of creation and the pain of personal loss, death and aging. It is a singular trip played out against the exciting context of the postwar explosion of cultural expression in France. She knew everyone: her colleagues in the French New Wave, the Black Panthers in California and even Jim Morrison, who would visit when in Paris."

Daguerréotypes by Agnès Varda( Visual )

19 editions published between 1962 and 2012 in 4 languages and held by 168 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The rue Daguerre in Paris is named after Louis Daguerre, the inventor of the first practical process of photography, who also gave his name to the first formal photographic portraits, the daguerreotypes. A typical Parisian street, not far from Montparnasse, it is here that film director Agnés Varda lives. Gently observing the daily routine of the shopkeepers who live and trade between nos. 70 and 90, she has made the modern equivalent of a daguerreotype. Through her eyes we see the day-to-day existence of her neighbours, focussing on the work they do within this self-contained world. Intercut between these sympathetic observations are extracts from a magician's performance, held at a local café
One sings, the other doesn't by Agnès Varda( Visual )

33 editions published between 1976 and 2012 in French and English and held by 165 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Varda's feminist narrative charts the friendship of two young women, of differing backgrounds and temperaments, over a period of fourteen years as each seeks to take control of her destiny and attain contentment. Pauline, aged 17, helps her friend Suzanne, 22, and the unmarried mother of two children, procure an abortion. Pauline becomes a singer, travels the world and has children by her Iranian lover. Suzanne returns to her parents' farm, educates herself and assumes the directorship of a family planning clinic. The two women meet ten years later at an anti-abortion demonstration and again twelve years after that, having kept in contact during the interim. Varda's film, marking the director's return after a nine-year hiatus from features, takes its theme from a maxim attributed to Simone de Beauvoir: "Women are made, not born." (Does not circulate)
