Surveys in modern mathematics(
)
15 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 1,057 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This collection of articles from the Independent University of Moscow is derived from the Globus seminars held there. They are given by world authorities, from Russia and elsewhere, in various areas of mathematics and are designed to introduce graduate students to some of the most dynamic areas of mathematical research. The seminars aim to be informal, wideranging and forwardlooking, getting across the ideas and concepts rather than formal proofs, and this carries over to the articles here. Topics covered range from computational complexity, algebraic geometry, dynamics, through to number theory and quantum groups. The volume as a whole is an overview of contemporary mathematics."BOOK JACKET

Intuitive topology by
V. V Prasolov(
Book
)
21 editions published between 1991 and 2011 in English and held by 520 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This book is an introduction to elementary topology presented in an intuitive way, emphasizing the visual aspect. Examples of nontrivial and often unexpected topological phenomena acquaint the reader with the picturesque world of knots, links, vector fields, and twodimensional surfaces. The book begins with definitions presented in a tangible and perceptible way, on an everyday level, and progressively makes them more precise and rigorous, eventually reaching the level of fairly sophisticated proofs. This allows meaningful problems to be tackled from the outset. Another unusual trait of this book is that it deals mainly with constructions and maps, rather than with proofs that certain maps and constructions do or do not exist. The numerous illustrations are an essential feature. The book is accessible not only to undergraduates but also to high school students and will interest any reader who has some feeling for the visual elegance of geometry and topology."Publisher

Problems and theorems in linear algebra by
V. V Prasolov(

)
26 editions published between 1994 and 2008 in 3 languages and held by 459 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
There are a number of very good books available on linear algebra. However, new results in linear algebra appear constantly, as do new, simpler, and better proofs of old results. Many of these results and proofs obtained in the past thirty years are accessible to undergraduate mathematics majors, but are usually ignored by textbooks. In addition, more than a few interesting old results are not covered in many books. In this book, the author provides the basics of linear algebra, with an emphasis on new results and on nonstandard and interesting proofs. The book features about 230 problems with

Elliptic functions and elliptic integrals by
V. V Prasolov(
Book
)
13 editions published between 1997 and 1998 in English and Undetermined and held by 349 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book is devoted to the geometry and arithmetic of elliptic curves and to elliptic functions with applications to algebra and number theory. It includes modern interpretations of some famous classical algebraic theorems such as Abel's theorem on the lemniscate and Hermite's solution of the fifth degree equation by means of theta functions. Suitable as a text, the book is selfcontained and assumes as prerequisites only the standard oneyear courses of algebra and analysis

Elements of combinatorial and differential topology by
V. V Prasolov(
Book
)
13 editions published between 2006 and 2012 in English and held by 327 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Modern topology uses very diverse methods. This book is devoted largely to methods of combinatorial topology, which reduce the study of topological spaces to investigations of their partitions into elementary sets, and to methods of differential topology, which deal with smooth manifolds and smooth maps. Many topological problems can be solved by using either of these two kinds of methods, combinatorial or differential. In such cases, both approaches are discussed." "One of the main goals of this book is to advance as far as possible in the study of the properties of topological spaces (especially manifolds) without employing complicated techniques. This distinguishes it from the majority of other books on topology." "The book contains many problems; almost all of them are supplied with hints or complete solutions."Jacket

Elements of homology theory by

13 editions published between 2007 and 2012 in English and held by 294 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The book is a continuation of the previous book by the author (Elements of Combinatorial and Differential Topology, Graduate Studies in Mathematics, Volume 74, American Mathematical Society, 2006). It starts with the definition of simplicial homology and cohomology, with many examples and applications. Then the KolmogorovAlexander multiplication in cohomology is introduced. A significant part of the book is devoted to applications of simplicial homology and cohomology to obstruction theory, in particular, to characteristic classes of vector bundles. The later chapters are concerned with singular homology and cohomology, and Cech and de Rham cohomology

1 edition published in 2000 in English and held by 226 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This is the English translation of the book originally published in Russian. It contains 20 essays, each dealing with a separate mathematical topic. The topics range from brilliant mathematical statements with interesting proofs, to simple and effective methods of problemsolving, to interesting properties of polynomials, to exceptional points of the triangle." "The essays are independent of one another for the most part, and each presents a vivid mathematical result that led to current research in number theory, geometry, polynomial algebra, or topology."Jacket

Algebraic curves : towards Moduli spaces by
Maxim E Kazaryan(
)
11 editions published between 2018 and 2019 in English and held by 211 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book offers a concise yet thorough introduction to the notion of moduli spaces of complex algebraic curves. Over the last few decades, this notion has become central not only in algebraic geometry, but in mathematical physics, including string theory, as well. The book begins by studying individual smooth algebraic curves, including the most beautiful ones, before addressing families of curves. Studying families of algebraic curves often proves to be more efficient than studying individual curves: these families and their total spaces can still be smooth, even if there are singular curves among their members. A major discovery of the 20th century, attributed to P. Deligne and D. Mumford, was that curves with only mild singularities form smooth compact moduli spaces. An unexpected byproduct of this discovery was the realization that the analysis of more complex curve singularities is not a necessary step in understanding the geometry of the moduli spaces. The book does not use the sophisticated machinery of modern algebraic geometry, and most classical objects related to curves such as Jacobian, space of holomorphic differentials, the RiemannRoch theorem, and Weierstrass points are treated at a basic level that does not require a profound command of algebraic geometry, but which is sufficient for extending them to vector bundles and other geometric objects associated to moduli spaces. Nevertheless, it offers clear information on the construction of the moduli spaces, and provides readers with tools for practical operations with this notion. Based on several lecture courses given by the authors at the Independent University of Moscow and Higher School of Economics, the book also includes a wealth of problems, making it suitable not only for individual research, but also as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate coursework
