Becket by

9 editions published between 1963 and 2007 in English and German and held by 1,498 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Despite differences in rank and background, King Henry II and Thomas Becket are lifelong friends. The King is in constant conflict with the Church, which refuses to contribute financing to his wars in France, and jealously guards the tax-free status granted it by previous monarchs. When the Archbishop of Canterbury dies, Henry has a brilliant idea: rather than another pious cleric loyal to Rome, he will appoint his old friend, Thomas Becket--technically a deacon--to the post. Unfortunately, Becket takes the job seriously, holding devotion to God and the Church above his loyalty to the throne, or the person of its inhabitant. In opposition to Henry, he proves abler than his predecessors do, and the clash of two powerful personalities leads to destruction

Bunny Lake is missing by
Otto Preminger(
Visual
)
9 editions published between 1965 and 2014 in English and held by 309 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In Bunny Lake, Preminger brings together the two main phases of his career. It recalls his moodily fluid studies in perverse psychology as a studio director at Fox (Laura, Where the Sidewalk Ends, Angel Face et al.) which merge (via Daisy Kenyon) into his explorations, as an independent producer-director, of the conditions of truth in a world of passions and preconceptions (Bonjour Tristesse, Anatomy of a Murder, Advise and Consent). The constant factor, in a chequered career, is Preminger's objective style, an insistence on keeping the jury out on his characters through a masterfully mobile camera which consistently frames them objectively in context. In combining whodunit and psychological thriller in Bunny Lake, Preminger, as in Laura, takes the subject of a 'missing' person as the means of exploring the illusion-and-reality theme
