Geometric topology : recent developments : lectures given on the 1st session of the Centro internazionale matematico estivo

Jeff Cheeger(

)
22 editions published between 1990 and 1991 in English and Undetermined and held by 350 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Geometric Topology can be defined to be the investigation of global properties of a further structure (e.g. differentiable, Riemannian, complex, algebraic etc.) one can impose on a topological manifold. At the C.I.M.E. session in Montecatini, in 1990, three courses of lectures were given onrecent developments in this subject which is nowadays emerging as one of themost fascinating and promising fields of contemporary mathematics. The notesof these courses are collected in this volume and can be described as: 1) the geometry and the rigidity of discrete subgroups in Lie groups especially in the case of lattices in semisimple groups; 2) the study of the critical points of the distance function and its appication to the understanding of the topology of Riemannian manifolds; 3) the theory of moduli space of instantons as a tool for studying the geometry of lowdimensional manifolds. CONTENTS: J. Cheeger: Critical Points of Distance Functions and Applications to Geometry. M. Gromov, P. Pansu, Rigidity of Lattices: An Introduction. Chr. Okonek: Instanton Invariants and Algebraic Surfaces

Universal symplectic forms in the soliton theory by Fedor Soloviev(
)
1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Using KricheverPhong's universal formula, we show that a multiplicative representation linearizes Sklyanian quadratic brackets for a multipole Lax function with a spectral parameter. The spectral parameter can be either rational or elliptic. As a byproduct, we obtain an extension of a Sklyanin algebra in the elliptic case. We discuss applications of these results to isospectral and isomonodromic equations with discrete time. KricheverPhong's formula provides a hierarchy of symplectic structures, and we show that there exists a nontrivial cubic bracket in Sklyanin's case. Also, we consider a generalization of the universal formula to variable base curves (suggested in [22]) in the simplest possible case of a rational base curve with moving marked points

Quantitative embeddability of groups by
Sean Li(

1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
We study two problems about embedding groups into metric spaces. In the first problem, we study how the wreath product operation affects the compression bounds for two finitely generated groups when the target space is Lp for p & isin; [1,2]. We show that the wreath product preserves the positivity of compression exponents. Additionally, we give a simplified proof of the fact that the wreath product operation preserves coarse embeddability and the Haagerup property. Furthermore, we derive quantitative lower bounds for each property in terms of the lower bounds for the two groups that compose the wreath product
