The future of the past by Alexander Stille( Book )

35 editions published between 2002 and 2013 in 6 languages and held by 1,224 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Space radar, infrared photography, carbon dating, DNA analysis, microfilm, digital databases - we have better technology than ever before for studying and preserving the past. And yet the by-products of technology threaten to destroy - in one or two generations - monuments, works of art, and ways of life that have survived thousands of years of hardship and war. This paradox is central to our age. We can access infinite amounts of information on the internet, but the historical context of it all is escaping us. Globalization may eventually benefit countries around the world; it will also, almost certainly, lead to the disappearance of hundreds of regional dialects, languages, and whole societies." "In The Future of the Past, Alexander Stille takes us on a tour of the past as it exists today and weighs its prospects for tomorrow, from China to Somalia to Washington, D.C. Through incisive portraits of their protagonists, he describes high-tech struggles to save the Great Sphinx and the Ganges; efforts to preserve Latin within the Vatican; the digital glut inside the National Archives, which may have lost more information in the information age than ever before; and an oral culture threatened by a "new" technology: writing itself. Wherever it takes him, Stille explores not just the past but also our ideas about the past: how they are changing - and how they will have to change if our past is to have a future."--Jacket

Excellent cadavers : the mafia and the death of the first Italian Republic by Alexander Stille( Book )

26 editions published between 1955 and 2011 in English and Dutch and held by 944 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Excellent Cadavers is the story of the extraordinary efforts of two Sicilian magistrates, Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, who took the war against the mafia further than anyone had dared before. That war would ultimately claim their lives as well as help topple the ruling coalition that had governed Italy since World War II. The engineers of the renowned "maxi-trials," Falcone and Borsellino succeeded in penetrating the mafia's code of silence and revealing, for the first time, the inner structure of Sicily's Cosa Nostra. One of their great breakthroughs was to win the cooperation of Tommaso Buscetta - the first of many Sicilian bosses to become witnesses - a development that revolutionized organized crime prosecutions in the United States as well as in Italy. "Before Buscetta we didn't even know the mafia's real name," the prosecutors said. Perhaps even more astounding than Falcone and Borsellino's successes were the government's efforts to unravel their accomplishments, to obstruct further investigation, and to impugn the character of the two prosecutors. After both men were assassinated in 1992, they were hailed as national heroes, and a massive public outcry demanded that the government pursue the investigative trail they had begun. The subsequent crackdown would lead to the indictment of many of the country's most powerful politicians

Io la conoscevo bene = I knew her well( Visual )

5 editions published in 2016 in Italian and held by 284 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The prismatic portrait of the days and nights of a party girl in sixties Rome is a revelation. It follows the gorgeous, seemingly liberated Adriana as she dallies with a wide variety of men, attends parties, goes to modeling gigs, and circulates among the rich and famous. Despite its often light tone, though, the film is a stealth portrait of a suffocating culture that regularly dehumanizes people, especially women

Documentary based on the book by Italian-American author Alexander Stille and featuring the photos of Sicilian photojournalist Letizia Battaglia, it chronicles the recent history of the Mafia and its integral -- and seemingly ineradicable -- relationship to postwar Italian politics. The film focuses on the events leading up to the historic anti-Mafia trials in Palermo mounted by Italian prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino in the mid 1980s and 1990s, and questions why so much of anti-Mafia legislation they fought and died for has since been undone by the Italian government

The history of another by Shimon Attie( Book )

3 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 91 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"“For a number of years, Shimon Attie has created his own photographic palimpsests, projecting historical images onto public spaces and then photographing them, trying to bring out buried layers of memory. “I am trying to give visual form to history and memory which is latent in the architecture and landscape of the present, latent but not visible. . . . More than my therapeutic training, I think my temperament made me interested in revealing layers of a buried or repressed past.” The projected image, Attie says, is a physical embodiment of the process of memory itself. “Like memory, the projection appears to have substance and materiality, but in fact it does not—it is only photons,” he says. “It’s an illusion.” The projections of historical photographs onto actual sites in the present have a ghostly, immaterial, ephemeral quality of fleeting memory.”--Publisher

Cocaine by Pitigrilli( )

2 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 44 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Paris in the 1920s - dizzy and decadent. Where a young man can make a fortune with his wits ... unless he is led into temptation. Cocaine's dandified hero Tito Arnaudi invents lurid scandals and gruesome deaths, and sells these stories to the newspapers. But his own life becomes even more outrageous than his press reports when he acquires three demanding mistresses. Elegant, witty and wicked, Pitigrilli's classic novel was first published in Italian in 1921 and charts the comedy and tragedy of a young man's downfall and the lure of a bygone era. The novel's descriptions of sex and drug use prompted church authorities to place it on a list of forbidden books, while appealing to filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder who wrote a script based on the tale. Cocaine retains its venom even today

The force of things : a marriage in war and peace by Alexander Stille( Book )

7 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in Italian and English and held by 12 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A masterpiece of literary memory'a powerful exploration of the intersections of family, history, and memory "One evening in May 1948, my mother went to a party in New York with her first husband and left it with her second, my father." So begins the passionate and stormy union of Mikhail Kamenetzki, aka Ugo Stille, one of Italy's most celebrated journalists, and Elizabeth Bogert, a beautiful and charming young woman from the Midwest. The Force of Things follows two families across the twentieth century'one starting in czarist Russia, the other starting in the American Midwest'and takes them across revolution, war, fascism, and racial persecution, until they collide at mid-century. Their immediate attraction and tumultuous marriage is part of a much larger story: the mass migration of Jews from fascist-dominated Europe in the 1930s and 1940s. It is a micro-story of that moment of cross-pollination that reshaped much of American culture and society. Theirs was an uneasy marriage between Europe and America, between Jew and WASP; their differences were a key to their bond yet a source of constant strife. Alexander Stille's The Force of Things is a powerful, beautifully written work with the intimacy of a memoir, the pace and readability of a novel, and the historical sweep and documentary precision of nonfiction writing at its best. It is a portrait of people who are buffeted about by large historical events, who try to escape their origins but find themselves in the grip of the force of things
