Schooling in modern European society : a report of the Academia Europaea( Book )

7 editions published between 1991 and 1992 in English and held by 322 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Europe is undergoing rapid and profound social and political change, and time-honoured methods and practices are being challenged as a result. Nowhere is this challenge more pressing and relevant than in education, which is charged with the task of preparing future generations for the "New Europe". Everyone accepts that education should be for all, that it needs to be extended, and that "education for life" is a phrase with real significance, but how is education best provided? In February 1990 the Academia Europaea council decided to sponsor a study group on education in modern European society funded by the Swedish Riksbankens Jubileumsfond. The report, in the form of this book, deals with many problem areas in European education; for example school quality, examinations, the teaching of foreign languages, and science education. It also analyses the role of the school as an institution in an increasingly complex technological and meritocratic society, and spells out the role of basic education in forming a European identity and consciousness

The impact of electronic publishing on the academic community : an international workshop organized by the Academia Europaea and the Wenner-Gren Foundation( Book )

7 editions published between 1998 and 2000 in English and held by 140 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Derived from a workshop co-organized by the Wenner-Gren Foundation and Academia Europaea, The Impact of Electronic Publishing on the Academic Community considers the effects on academia of changes in publication methods brought about by the advent of information technology. It is clear that there is a movement towards greater use of electronic media in all academic disciplines, with much of the impetus generated by the new opportunities it brings: e.g. facilities for full searching of text: links to other on-line journals; and links from a particular paper to other related works." "The book begins with a review of current activities, after which experts from a wide variety of backgrounds discuss the plans for implementing electronic publishing in their specific subject areas."--BOOK JACKET

Euroscientia Conferences, formerly "The European Science and Technology Forum" were created in 1994 by the European Commission in order to stimulate reflection and debate on science and technology on a European scale. To this aim, they provide a framework for conferences and studies on subjects related to historical, cultural, ethical, social, but also economic and political aspects of science and technology. The originality of the Euroscientia Conferences, when compared with other initiatives in this field, is to address the questions dealt with specifically within their European dimension: attention is concentrated on the particularity of the situation in the field concerned in Europe in comparison with other parts of the world; the differences between European countries and regions; the aspects related to the process of building Europe; the needs and possibilities of collaboration at European level, etc. Over the years, the European Union has developed its own research policy. Conceived in order to both supplement and support national research efforts, this policy is implemented through large collaborative research programmes co-ordinated within the so-called pluriannual "Research and Technological Development Framework Programmes". The basic principles of these programmes are: stimulating the creation of collaborative networks across Europe; supporting joint research projects associating universities, enterprises and research centres from different European countries; and promoting the mobility of researchers and exchanges. The main characteristic of the Fifth Framework Programme (1998-2002) is to focus the European research effort on a limited number of subject matters relating to the large social and economic needs, issues and challenges which the European Union is currently facing: employment and industrial competitiveness; problems related to public health, environment, transport and, in general, the quality of life of European citizens

1 edition published in 1997 in French and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

[Ed.]
