Driver's enhanced vision system (DEVS)( Book )

4 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A study was conducted to determine the feasibility of using advanced technologies to enhance the response capability of Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting crews in extremely low visibility conditions. his study has identified technology, evaluated systems, and defined requirements for equipment necessary to meet this need, the Driver's Enhanced Vision System (DEVS) - DEVS is composed of three subsystems: Night Vision, an infrared camera and monitor which enhances vision in smoke, fog, adverse weather, and darkness; navigation, a Differential OPS receiver and moving map display inside the cab; and Tracking, a digital radio datalink between the command center and the vehicles over which accident information, vehicle position reports, and other messages are sent. This document describes the constituent technologies and evaluations that were performed and defines preliminary specifications for the DFVS system
Analysis of test criteria for specifying foam firefighting agents for aircraft rescue and firefighting by Joseph L Scheffey( Book )

2 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Foam agent quantities and application rates for FAA certified airports are based on large-scale fire test data of Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF) and protein-based foams. The philosophy is to control aircraft fuel fires in sixty seconds. Foam agents which are used for aviation applications should demonstrate this level of performance, including a safety factor which assures adequate performance under less than optimum conditions. A review of standard test methods and performance criteria indicates a wide range of requirements. The U.S. Military Specification (MIL SPEC) for AFFF, on which the original agent criteria was developed, is the most stringent in terms of extinguishment application density. However, no direct correlation has been demonstrated between many of the required physical/chemical properties tests and fire extinguishment/burnback performance. It was demonstrated, using comparative data from numerous small and large-scale fire tests, that the small-scale MIL SPEC fire tests correlate with large-scale test results. MIL SPEC agents, which provide a safety factor over minimum FAA requirements, also are formulated to have proportioning, storage, stability, and shelf-life attributes appropriate for crash rescue firefighting applications. Adoption of the MIL SPEC for AFFF agents is recommended. Future work related to foam testing should focus on the use of first principles to establish fundamental foam extinguishment mechanisms. Fuel fire hazard penetration into a model fuselage as a function of circumferential door location and fuel bed height by Thor I Eklund( Book )

3 editions published in 1980 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The purpose of this test program is to devise and evaluate techniques for modeling aircraft cabin fires. A rotatable model fuselage section, 3 feet in diameter and 10 feet long, was placed adjacent to a height-adjustable 4-foot-square pan of JP-4 for fire tests in a quiescent indoor environment. One door on the fuselage side was opened and exposed to the pool fire, while another door in the end of the fuselage remained either opened or closed during the fire test to create natural ventilation effects in the interior. Rotation of the fuselage and raising or lowering the fuel pan provided variations in the resultant interior hazard and led to the following four conclusions: (1) the opening of an additional door always decreases the measured hazard from an external pool fire covering an open doorway in a windless environment; (2) for the specific rotational positions tested on the model, the hazard to the interior from the external fire is increased as the fire base is lowered on the side of the fuselage; (3) when the fuel fire base is maintained at a fixed height with respect to the fuselage, the hazard peaks at the position where actual doorways are installed; and (4) noted discrepancies among past tests with a variety of fuselages can be explained by accounting for differences in door location on the fuselage perimeter and height of the fuel bed.
