Notable inclusions are his seminal Black Paintings, recent high-relief aluminum works, and a selection of drawings, maquettes, and digital renderings--many of which are reproduced here for the first time--that offer fresh insight into Stella's thinking and process. Essays discuss topics such as the artist's early years at Phillips Academy in Andover and Princeton University, and his late-career architectural pieces created with the aid of computer software. An interview with Stella conducted by American painter Laura Owens allows Stella to illuminate his artistic practice in his own words. Carmen Herrera : lines of sight by Dana Miller( Book )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 227 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Cuban-born artist Carmen Herrera (b. 1915) has painted for more than seven decades, though it is only in recent years that acclaim for her work has catapulted the artist to international prominence. This handsome volume offers the first sustained examination of her early career from 1948 to 1978, which spans the art worlds of Havana, Paris, and New York. Essays consider the artist's early studies in Cuba, her involvement with the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles in postwar Paris, and her groundbreaking New York output, as well as situate her work in the context of a broader Latin American avant-garde art. An essay by Dana Miller considers Herrera's New York work of the 1950s through the 1970s, when Herrera was arriving at and perfecting her signature style. Personal family photographs from Herrera's archive enrich the narrative, and a chronology addressing the entirety of her life and career features additional documentary images. Over eighty works are illustrated as color plates, making this book the most extensive representation of Herrera's work to date."

East of the Mississippi : nineteenth-century American landscape photography by Diane Waggoner( Book )

2 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 143 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This important reconsideration of landscape photography in nineteenth-century America explores crucial but neglected geographies, practitioners, and themes. Although pictures of the West have dominated our perception of nineteenth-century American landscape photography, many photographers were working in the eastern half of the United States during that period. Their pictures, with the exception of Civil War images, have received relatively scant attention. Redressing this imbalance is East of the Mississippi, the first book to focus exclusively on the arresting eastern photographs that helped shape America's national identity. Celebrating natural wonders such as Niagara Falls and the White Mountains as well as capturing a cultural landscape fundamentally altered by industrialization, these works also documented the impact of war, promoted tourism, and played a role in an emerging environmentalism. Showcasing some 180 photographs from 1839 to 1900 in a rich variety of media and formats--from daguerreotypes, salted paper prints, tintypes, cyanotypes, and albumen prints to stereo cards and photograph albums--this volume traces the evolution of eastern landscape photography and introduces the artists who explored this subject. Also considered are the dynamic ties with other media--for instance, between painters and photographers such as the Bierstadt and Moran brothers--and the distinctive development of landscape photography in America"--
