Introduction to distributed algorithms by Gerard Tel( Book )

42 editions published between 1994 and 2004 in 3 languages and held by 775 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The lower cost and increased flexibility and availability of computer networks means that they are rapidly replacing centralized 'mainframes'. The implementation of networked systems and the control of applications running in them require, however, the design of new techniques and methods: collectively known as distributed algorithms. In this textbook Professor Tel provides a clear, yet rigorous introduction to a large collection of these methods and the related theory that has been developed over the last fifteen years. He concentrates on algorithms for the point-to-point message passing model, and includes algorithms for the implementation of computer communication networks (i.e. routing, data transmission, connection management and techniques for avoiding deadlock). Other key areas discussed are algorithms for the control of distributed applications (wave, broadcast, election, termination detection, randomized algorithms for anonymous networks, snapshots, deadlock detection, synchronous systems), and fault-tolerance achievable by distributed algorithms (possibility or otherwise in asynchronous systems, consensus in synchronous systems, authentication, synchronization and stabilizing algorithms). Developed from lectures given to undergraduate and graduate students, this textbook comes complete with examples and exercises with solutions, but the treatment of algorithms is deep enough to ensure that it will be useful for practising engineers and scientists
Distributed algorithms : 8th international workshop by Gerard Tel( )

28 editions published in 1994 in English and German and held by 488 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This volume presents the proceedings of the 8th International Workshop on Distributed Algorithms (WDAG '94), held on the island of Terschelling, The Netherlands in September 1994. Besides the 23 research papers carefully selected by the program committee, the book contains 3 invited papers. The volume covers all relevant aspects of distributed algorithms; the topics discussed include network protocols, distributed control and communication, real-time systems, dynamic algorithms, self-stabilizing algorithms, synchronization, graph algorithms, wait-free algorithms, mechanisms for security, replicating data, and distributed databases."--PUBLISHER'S WEBSITE

Network orientation by Gerard Tel( Book )

3 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "This paper analyses how the symmetry of a processor network influences the existence of a solution for the network orientation problem. The orientation of cliques, hypercubes, and tori is the problem of assigning labels to each link of each processor, in such a way that a sense of direction is given to the network. In this paper the problem of network orientation for these three topologies is studied under the assumption that the network contains a single leader, under the assumption that the processors possess unique identities, and under the assumption that the network is anonymous. The distinction between these three models is considered fundamental in distributed computing
Linear election for oriented hypercubes by Gerard Tel( Book )

2 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "In this article we propose an election algorithm for the oriented hypercube, where each edge is assumed to be labeled with its dimension in the hypercube. The algorithm exchanges O(N) messages and uses O(log²N) time (where N is the size of the cube). A randomized version of the algorithm achieves the same (expected) message and time bounds, but uses messages of only O(log log N) bits and can be used in anonymous hypercubes."

The derivation of distributed termination detection algorithms from garbage collection schemes by Gerard Tel( Book )

3 editions published in 1990 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "It is shown that the termination detection problem for distributed computations can be modeled as an instance of the garbage collection problem. Consequently, algorithms for the termination detection problem are obtained by applying transformations to garbage collection algorithms. The transformation can be applied to collectors of the 'mark- and-sweep' type as well as to reference counting garbage collectors. As examples, the scheme is used to transform the weighted reference counting protocol, the distributed reference counting protocol of Lermen and Maurer, and Ben-Ari's mark-and-sweep collector into termination detection algorithms. Known termination detection algorithms as well as new variants are obtained."
