Set in Singapore and Malaya in the early 1960's. Kassim Selamat, a struggling musician (saxophone player) falls in love with Sabariah, a girl from a wealthy background. Although already engaged to Dr. Ismadi, Sabariah choses Kassim, much to the anger of her mother. They marry, settle down in Penang to a life of poverty that eventually forces a pregnant Sabariah to return to her mother in Singapore. What was to be a brief separation turns into something else when Sabariah's mother sends Kassim a telegram with the lie that Sabariah has died
