John Ireland papers by John Ireland( )

The papers are most abundant for the latter 1880s-early 1900s, when Ireland was at the height of his power and influence within and beyond the Catholic Church. They reflect his role as staunch opponent of attempts to establish parishes and appoint bishops on the basis of ethnicity; originator of the Faribault Plan, whereby Minnesota Catholic schools would be run by the state; central figure in the "Americanism" controversy in the Catholic Church; co-founder of Catholic University of America; and supporter of organized labor, particularly the Knights of Labor when it faced papal condemnation. Papers for this period also document Ireland's role as a statesman and diplomat who attempted to avert the Spanish-American War and who helped conclude a settlement between the United States and the Vatican regarding compensation for church property in the Philippine Islands after the war
