On earth as in heaven : ecological vision and initiatives of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew by Bartholomew( )

10 editions published between 2011 and 2012 in English and held by 411 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"No worldwide Church leader has been as internationally recognized for his dynamic leadership and initiatives in addressing the theological, ethical, and practical imperative in relation to the critical environmental issues of our time as His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. Patriarch Bartholomew has long placed the environment at the head of his Church's agenda by developing ecological programs, chairing Pan-Orthodox gatherings and international symposia, and organizing environmental seminars for more than a decade. This book demonstrates just why His All Holiness has been dubbed the "Green Patriarch" by Al Gore and the media. This third and final volume of the spiritual leader's selected writings showcases his statements on environmental degradation, global warming, and climate change. It contains numerous speeches and interviews in various circumstances, including ecological symposia, academic seminars, and regional and international events, over the first twenty years of his ministry. The book also encompasses a selection of pastoral letters and exhortations--ecclesiastical, ecumenical, and academic--by His All Holiness for occasions such as Easter and Christmas, honorary doctorates, and academic awards."--Publisher's abstract

Sacred seed( )

3 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 342 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Inspired by physicist and environmental leader Dr. Vandana Shiva, this collection of essays draw on the wisdom of ancient and modern traditions to remind readers of the profound sacredness of the seed--how in its purity, it is the source and renewal of all of life. For centuries the planting of the seed in the earth not only nourished humanity, but also symbolized the mystery of life and the journey of the soul. Yet, modern culture has begun to lose an appreciation of the primal meaning of the seed. Tenderly created from original writings of mystics, shamans, monastics, and priests, and featuring vibrant photos, this book bears witness that the Earth is alive, and establishes that only by working together with the earth--with its wonder and mystery--can we help in its healing and regeneration and once again bring meaning back into the world

In addition, he provides a substantial historical and theological introduction to the initiatives and writings of Patriarch Bartholomew that also invites readers into the unparalleled environmental perspective of the Orthodox Church." Ever-moving repose : a contemporary reading of Maximus the Confessor's theory of time by Sotiris Mitralexis( Book )

4 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 71 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Sotiris Mitralexis offers a contemporary look at Maximus the Confessor's (580-662 CE) understanding of temporality, logoi, and deification, through the perspective of contemporary philosopher and theologian Christos Yannaras, as well as John Zizioulas and Nicholas Loudovikos. Mitralexis argues that Maximus possesses both a unique theological ontology and a unique threefold theory of temporality: time, the Aeon, and the radical transformation of temporality and motion in an ever-moving repose. With these three distinct modes of temporality, a Maximian theory of time can be reconstructed, which can be approached via his teaching on the logoi and deification. In this theory, time is not merely measuring ontological motion, but is more particularly measuring a relationship, the consummation of which effects the transformation of time into a dimensionless present devoid of temporal, spatial, and generally ontological distance--thereby manifesting a perfect communion-in-otherness. In examining Maximian temporality, the book is not focusing on only one aspect of Maximus' comprehensive Weltanschauung, but looks at the Maximian vision as a whole through the lens of temporality and motion". -- Cover

1 edition published in 2002 in English and held by 35 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Documentary film that shows that the need for a universal ecological consciousness is now essential to the planet's survival. With this in mind, the Religion, Science and the Environment symposium, attended by the Ecumenical Patriarch and leading theologians, environmentalists and scientists, sailed the Adriatic Sea and focused on how humanity can be inspired towards an ecological ethos. The six countries of the Adriatic range from one of the wealthiest to some of the poorest in Europe; and their problems range from those of an advanced industrial economy to those in transition and recovery from recent wars. The voyage included visits to toxic hot spots as well as successful projects to protect the environment. The symposium concluded in Venice where the Patriarch and Pope John Paul II came together to sign the Venice Declaration, in which they laid the foundation for developing a joint environmental ethos
La réforme liturgique du métropolite Cyprien de Kiev : l'introduction du typikon sabaïte dans l'office divin by Job Getcha( Book )

3 editions published in 2010 in French and held by 32 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Cyprian Tsamblak, born around 1330 in the region of Trnovo, was a disciple of Philotheos Kokkinos, Patriarch of Constantinople from 1353 to 1355, and from 1364 to 1376. Closely linked to this major figure of Byzantine hesychasm of the XIVth century, Cyprian lived on Mount Athos where he was initiated into heychast doctrine. He then became Metropolitan of Kiev and Lithuania (in 1375), and was finally enthroned Metropolitan of Kiev and all Rus', a see which he occupied, twice from 1381 to 1382, and from 1390 until his death in 1406. He imitated his master Philotheos, who canonised the neo-sabaïte ordo, which is at the origin of the actual "Byzantine rite". Thus, Cyprian began a major liturgical reform in Rus' at the end of the XIVth century. Until then, two Typika were used : the Typikon of the Great Church of Constantinople in cathedrals and parishes, and the Typikon of Patriarch Alexis the Studite, observed in monasteries. Cyprian tried to make liturgy uniform by operating a great synthesis through the introduction of the neo-sabaïte typikon, which had to be followed in both monasteries and secular churches. Our study is composed of three parts : the first present the life and work of Metropolitan Cyprian ; the second analyses the changes in the liturgy of the Russian Church at the end of the XIVth century ; and the third offers an evaluation of this liturgical reform in the light of the hesychast movement and attempts to define the liturgical theology of its author
