The Manxman by Alfred Hitchcock( Visual )

20 editions published between 1928 and 2009 in 4 languages and held by 195 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Hitchcock's last silent film (Blackmail was released in silent and sound versions) is a triangle melodrama involving two friends, one a fisherman the other a lawyer, in love with the same woman. Hitchcock's almost total dismissal of the film is unjustified. The mixing of the theme of ambition versus love with that of the obligations of friendship foreshadows the transference-of-guilt theme more fully developed in later Hitchcock films. The fisherman is left sad and bemused carrying the burden of his friend's betrayal of trust. Characteristically, the Isle of Man setting is not so much a backdrop as an abstract setting for the drama
